As disturbing as the fur debate, Has anyone ever seen a canned hunt? it is where they take the unsuspecting caged animal, usually someones unwanted exotic pet, put it in a cage than let it out while 10-15 Mighty Hunters with their dogs stand their watching as their dogs rip the animal apart until ONE BRAVE HUNTER shoots it and than has the nerve to stand there with a big smile on his face for the cameras, as if he just bagged a prize. These are pathetic people. I can't see how anyone cannot have compassion for animals. (I swerve in the road to avoid a frog or caterpillar if I see it). I also hear that alot of these "canned hunt hunters" are prominate people in their respective states, politcians etc., who do this. They are kept very hush hush. If I ever knew where these activities were held, you could beleive the participants would not like me very much
yes...i agree...canned hunts are not the sport at all..they do it with big game such as elk, bear, boars and the like here in my state....for a price you can "bag" anything...really makes me sick...i am how ever not against real hunting...as long as you eat what you hunt.
not only is that extremely disturbing ....... did you know that now you can sit on your butt on the computer and hunt too ? that made me even more ill when i saw it on the news. they have temporarily put a stop to that since there were certain kinks that needed to be worked out but i bet it wont be long before that is an available option again. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I am against hunting, period. There is no excuse for such a 'BLOOD' sport!! Just imagine the fear and anguish that the poor animal has to endure, especially when being chased by dozens of dogs and the dogs shredding the animal to pieces.
I can only hope that hunters of any sort, even trophy hunters, end up with a malfunctioning shotgun that backfires, only then they may get the opportunity to sample some of what they have been dishing out!!
GOD DAMN THEM!!
Duchess - you really ought to be ashamed of yourself - fancy releasing the poor coons so as to train your dogs!! Don't you have anything more humane to do with your time?!
That is NOT hunting. I don't know what that is.... it's barbaric whatever it is.
A real hunter, IMO, does it the "old fashioned way". Gets his gun, sits and waits until the right animal comes along and shoots it, killing it with one shot, so that it dies instantly. Or, they send their dog to flush & retrieve the animal. Then they use the animal, they don't mount it on a wall. That is JUST my opinion, you don't have to agree.

Life of riely, just to clarify our GNCH that are trained never even see a coon. So once you get them started they instintly know how to track and bay. It's just fundamental and hunting is not for everyone so i would never push my views on anyone.
The type of caged hunts that was dicussed fisrt in the forum is very tasteless and even a yard dog could do that. So I hope I dont look like a heartless redneck because thats far from it. What we do as profesional coon hunters is very competive and not many dogs make the cut. Thery are graded on all aspects of their ability. Its a real sport and NOT a blood sport. But I'm biased on that and you'd have to check it out on your own to make your own opin.
Yeah i know, sometimes I can open mouth , insert foot when it comes to hunting . I love my coon dogs so much and we have such a great family bond because of hunting that I cant help myself to talk about it every chance I get. i forget this is more of a pet lover site and not my other coonhunting buddy one.(blushing!)
Hmmm. Came across this post and really felt the need to reply. I suppose it would be to defend hunting. Hunting in the 'traditional' sense. Not "canned" hunts. I have seen where they do the big game canned hunts and there is really no sport in that whatsoever. That is purely a money venture and caters to the super-wealthy who otherwise would not be hunting at all. These canned hunts also involve animals that were, for the most part, BRED only for this. They are not WILD animals at all but more like livestock that the breeders have raised. These "rich folks" mostly want something to hang on the wall and brag to their friends about. You know "Yeah, fellows, I shot that monster at 700 yards running wide open..."
I understand what Duchess is talking about because we 'Coon hunt too. That is actually an excellent way to start a pup. They get more of a 'hunt' type setting to learn in. I would also like to clarify for CASSANDRA that these hunts do not always end in the death of what you would consider a 'poor defensless animal'. All of the competition Coon Hunts that I know of let the dogs tree the coon (bay it) and then award points to the dogs accordingly...at which point everyone WALKS AWAY -- leaving the animal unharmed!!
I hunt in the true sense of the word. I don't participate in or condone "canned" hunts.
I take great offense at your extremely harsh comments regarding a gun backfiring on all those who hunt. Your opinions are your own and you are entitled to them, but to wish harm upon another person is crossing the line.
So in my deepest sympathy for your complete and total ingnorance (which you so freely spew forth), I will refrain from posting to you further.
I do wish harm on anyone that causes harm to animals especially hunters. There is NO excuse to hunt, NONE. AND even given your excuse that coons are not killed, they are still chased and tormented and some have been known to die of shock. HOW would you like to be chased till you are almost out of breath not knowing if you are going to escape unscathed or you are going to end up killed, hum?? Treat others, including the animal kingdom, as you would like to be treated. It's one thing for carnivores to hunt for food but what is your damn excuse?? Your hands and all the hands of hunters are bloodied and all I can say is "GOD damn you!!""
Cassandra, there IS reason to hunt. Alot of people hunt to eat the animal. They are not putting it to waste.
If you want to get down to it, humans are more humane about the way we hunt than any animal in the wild. They do not kill their prey insantly with a gun, instead they tear apart their flesh while they're still alive.
My cousin used to hunt deer. I remember going to his house and seeing the deer hanging from the hooks. I asked why he did it and he said one deer was enough meat for a few weeks of dinner, and he used the skin and other things to make things. Is he a cruel man? No. He loves animals and respects them. He has a german shepherd that sleeps in his bed at night. He leaves food out for the stray cats.
No I do not agree with the type of hunting described in the first post. I think it's stupid and a waste of time, and cruel. If you don't like hunting that's fine, you don't have to do it... I know I couldn ever kill another living being... but you don't have to get nasty about it. No one is going to listen to you.
