Today I went to pick up my grandmother from chruch, there I found a beautiful female black lab mix. Someone there told me she has been there a few weeks and they think she belonged to the people that lived across the street however their house was destroyed by Hurricane Rita and they have not been back since. I noticed she had mud all on her back and she puts no weight on her hind leg. I was told she was hit by a car, how someone knows that and still did not help is beyond me! I decided to bring her home, there was no way I could let her die out there. Anyway she is now living on the porch until I can get her to the vet to make sure she is healthy enough to bring inside with the other dogs. The person who told me she was hit by a car said that if her leg is broke and has started to heal there is nothing the vet can do for it, is that true? She seems to get along fine, she runs and plays I just don't want to see any problems caused by a leg that will not heal right.
I would take her to a vet NOW and let them decide what to do with her leg as soon as humanly possible. Because there might be damage that you do/can not see. It may cause her problems in the future. Sometimes they can fix it too. Please take her to the vet SOON!!! You are very sweet to help!
Depending on the prognosis for future function of the leg and use in its present state, the vet can do surgery and rebreak and set it again in a more proper position, I'm sure only if the current position will hinder his mobility.
