I know allot of you have registered dogs and picked the breed for a certain reason but I was curious to know what registry you bought your dog from and why.
I've had my mind made up( hubby has NO say!) that I want a poodle and since all my hubbies dogs are UKC registered I've been looking more in that direction. But his reason for having UKC reg.hounds is that they recognize the breeds he uses for competition and they hold allot of events for his hunting hobbie.
So there are lots of registries I can choose from and I wanted input from you guys, just to see who's yours was registered with and why you chose that particular one.
Most of my dogs are APRI. I like them, and they do not support the paws bill. I show APRI dogs. I won't do AKC because they helped write the PAWS bill. And part of the registration costs help push that bill. I do have ONE AKC dog, but will register him APRI. I have a CKC dog too, but not by my choosing. I was lied to with that one.
I've never heard of APRI, but then again I don't breed and register. But I do have one dog who is registered AKC. What is this bill and how can I find out more about it? And what is the differnce in that registry? I know about the UKC, AKC, and the two CKC's.
Dutchess...my opinion only here...and take it with a grain of salt...
I know why your dogs are ukc...that part i understand because of the type....I have AKC bred dogs only...and will only buy them...not a miracle regisry by any means...but my extimation the best one, of the bunch...but..I also breed cats..Persians and Himmies..and I feel the same about CFA...they have NCFA...but all the cats ive seen from that registry dont look right...not up to the standard...I guess Im an AKC/CFA snob.( and I will admit it)..but in actuality...the pup is going to be only as good as the breeder...and if a breeder is good..and you do the research and see all the testing is up to snuff...you will undoubably find the poodle to be AKC 9 chances out of ten...no disrespect...but the other registries in my extimation show a breeders intent...many when they post on here claim the key is cheaper registrations fees...which translates to more profit ( to some mind you...not all) I dont know if there are lots of UKC poodles out there in your state or where you could find them...but Im just going on what I have seen over all my years buying, selling and breeding..I would start searching and see what you come up with...and dont compromise...Poodles as sHepherds and many others have been damaged by unscrupluious breeding over time because they are popular....but look at the health issues associated with each breed because of it..so..if you get one..make sure the testing has been done..and then look at the over all look of the dogs...ive seen some shoddy looking poodles in my days..and some fantastic ones...like the 2 lady on this site with toys and standards...the standard breeder I cant think of her name she is UKC...but she would have to be because she breeds parti colors and that isnt a breed standad for AKC...and she shows so UKC is a wonderful choice for her...and her dogs do not look second rate at all...fabulious looking as a matter of fact...I dont know..I guess im rambling..but..I just wanted to throw my vote out for AKC...But UKC is a good choice too...I have a dual registered champion with UKC/AKC and a International Champion AKC/Canadian KC...so...But Dutch...you know dogs...do what you know best to do...its just like a hunting dog...just with curly hair and a docked tail...you will do fine...
Please tell me...what is the color your thinking of..I just love the silver...and I hope one day to have a silver standard...one day...lol
My dog is UABR but there is no reason for it. I love Chi-Ching and bought him as a pet only, I liked the breeder and his dogs. So, he could have not been registered at all, I still would have gotten him.
I do think that when my daughter gets her poodle(it will be like 7 years LOL) I will be looking at UKC though because I like them better.
All of my dogs are AKC, but about 1/2 are double registered UKC. I personally like UKC shows better because after I have thought about it, I really don't like the use of handers or that handlers be allowed.
That said (hee hee) I use a handler AKC, because I have to in my breed and that is crap. It sucks that the same dog can do squat under one person and title under another. May as well buy the title.
As far as PAWS and AKC, there are a lot of things AKC is doing right now that irritate and annoy me, but I am not going to leave any time soon because they are the most reputable registry. Weather it is based on merit or simply because they are the biggest and have the best publicity well... could be argued.
I would be a LOT more comfortable with PAWS and maybe even support it if the specific rules and guidlines were available, but they aren't because last I heard they hadn't even made them yet. Which is scary, how can you support something when the details haven't been written? Plus, rules could start out one way and change quickly in to something terrible.
Wow thats allot if good insight! I'm not sure about the color dut I was thinking Choc or creme. The lady at the feed mill had a silver for Lord knows how many years and I got goo-goo eyed evrytime I saw her.
But I had 3 boys and knew a house dog was out of the question. It would be like having 4 babes and the working dogs were enough! So now My boys are bigger and into theier own hobbies I think its time for me to get one. Defiantlly a girl! I'm tired of being the only Ms. Priss around here!LOL!
My only purebred dog is registered with the AKC. I strongly recommend that even if you want to get your dog registered UKC, get an AKC registered pup/dog to start off with. Why? Because with the AKC papers you can regsiter your dog with ANY registry in the US that will accept that breed.. and you can also register the dog with other countries.. as the AKC is the only all breed registry that is recognized by the FCI and other countries. So you can use the AKC papers as proof of breeding, and then register yoru dog with the UKC.. the double registration thing is very handy, because you can do even more events.
If you feel strongly about it and you should. Make sure and write your senators. There are some easy steps to guide you through it including a letter generator. We need to stop this ugly bill in its tracks!!!
As to the subject of this thread. I only register AKC as of now but, am interested in UKC as well since we have a nice club here and they do all breed shows. I have always been involved with AKC registered dogs.
Before Kelsey (my 2-year-old, female, Golden Retriever) came along I mostly had mutts. They came from either the shelter, a friend (now ex-friend), or a couple dogs came from people that their dog got pregnant from a different breed of dog.
So I really didn't pay attention to registries and didn't know much about them.
Then after my last dog died over two years ago (he was a mutt), I wanted to search for a purebred Golden Retriever because I wanted to do agility and possible breeding. Ever since I was a small child I knew that eventually I wanted to breed and compete with dogs...either Golden Retrievers or Parson (Jack) Russell Terriers [my two favorite breeds].
The breeder I happened to choose bred AKC registered Golden Retrievers. I only knew a little about the AKC so I researched it more and now I have become aware of all the different types of registeries.
I prefer the AKC and I always will get AKC registered dogs (if they're purebred of course). I may duel register with the UKC or CanadianKC in the future but that's about it. I don't like all that is going on with the AKC right now but I'm not going to boycott them just because of that.
If I were you I would just get an AKC pup and also register it with the UKC. Good luck!
