hi, i just got a bichi-poo pup he is almost 8 weeks old. ive had him 1 week tomororw. he warmed up to us very quickly and is the most lovable thing ever. i brought him home in a crate and the first day he stayed in there i could tell he felt safe there. but after that day he wants nothing to do with this crate and i dont force him to go in it because he cries and i feel bad. so yesterday i went and got him a puppy play pen for the house. its good sized so he can have this bed and toys and his potty pad in there also and of coarse food and water. i thought he would like this better since he has alot of room to play. well he cries after a few mintues of being in there. i do have treats and his blanket and every thing he has when hes out of this pen. i just put him in it obout 15 min ago and he was crying and whining and i just walked away after trying to comfort him and i came down stairs and im ignoring him. and it worked he is now quiet and calmed down. i turned the tv up louder then normal and he is in the living room/dinning room area where he can see the tv and what ever else he wants. is this as good as crate training? should i put his crate in there so he can go in there and get use to it and be cozy? i just didnt like that he had the run of the house when i was in the shower or had to leave him for a few hours and come home to" little messes" on the floor. also he is doing great with peeing on his potty pads but he hasnt gotton down that he needs to also do the the other on it to is this common? for being only almost 8 weeks old he is doing a good job with peeing on the pad he does have a few mishaps but more good then bad but when i cant watch him i dont know if hes peeing elsehwere in the house.. can anyone give me some advice in what i need to do? and yes hes been sleeping with me in bed every night and does very well. he will stay there all night with out any messes in bed . the first 2 nights i slept on the couch with him and he was up and down all nigth but then moved into bed and he lays there by me all night and i wake up to check on him and hes sleeping and /or just laying there . am i spoiling him and now he wont go in a crate because hes use to sleeping with me? its only been a week tho and some of the things i read they say hes alittle to young to start crate training?? gosh i have so many things i would like to talk obout and hope some one has the answers to some of these questions i have. im a first time puppy owner. but we do have a cat and a house bunny. thanks and i hope some one has some help.. theresa
In my opinion, a dog that sleeps with you is going to be just a little bit harder to crate because they are so used to having company all the time and don't develop enough independence. I am guilty of that, too, so I'm not criticizing. You just have to know what you want in a dog. If you want a dog that goes quietly to the crate when you want him to, you have to provide some consistency and use it at night, when you're gone and when you're too busy to supervise.
If you're happy with the pen, then use it consistently, but if you dont think you want to use it forever and want to be able to use just the crate, I'd start now.
Start with calling him to his crate and treating him, letting him stay inside with the door open so he associates the crate with a good thing.. Gradually lengthen the time and start closing the door. Don't take him out when he's whining, ignore it completely. That's the hard part.
thanks for the posts. i just have to stick to my plan of him needing to be in the pen while im away or i dont have time to watch him i hope he picks up on that soon. hes a smart puppy and i guess im just holding him to much and toting him around all day. its alot harder then i ever thought it would be to train him . also is it common for him to be going pee on the potty pad but pooping where ever? he seemed to be trying to go on the pad but by the time he wiggled and circled he would have his butt hanging off it . but now ive been catching him going where ever. but he mainly pees on this pad. of coarse a few accidents but more good then bad by all means. and they say not to spank him when he goes where he isnt . how do you tell him that that isnt the place to go? if i catch him in the act i pick him up and carry him to his pad and some times that helps and a few times hes went on the pad but it seems the last few days hes been doing some place else that isnt of coarse where hes suppose to go. what do i do? im using that natures maricle cleaning stuff and was told that was very good and would take the sent away and he wouldnt go there again does this work on poop to? and what do i do when he goes some place else? as you can see im a first time puppy owner. bentley ( his name) is a over all good puppy way needy but gotta love him. thanks again for the help and im going to keep trying to get him in his crate and play pen. this pen has a place to connect his crate i wonder if this would work so he could go in his crate and then come out to play? maybe the pen is to big so it isnt comforting? gosh i just dont know.... this is very hard. i think my children were easier to potty train lol theresa
