Here, here Ottopup. My sentiments exactly! Who cares if Ottopup and myself are new, Merico, we're still entitled to our opinions. Senority doesn't matter that much in a internet forum. Give me a break. If some posters on here want to be rude to ALL new members, why not make this a private board. But if it's going to be an open forum where you allow new members to join, have some common courtsey. It seems to me that this forum has a bigger problem than just trolling. Some of the members make this a crappy place to be as well, IMHO.

Oh, and Acey the poster wasn't attacking you personally by saying YOU disliked mixed breeds. They just stated that some people don't like them, which is correct reading some of the post on here. There's no need to take a general post personally or to poke fun of someone on their very first post. I was a part of a ferret forum before moving to a state were they are illegal. The people on their were so friendly. New members always commented on how different that forum was from the other pet forums. I know see what they mean.

But I digress, Fab congrats on your new baby! But I agree with some of the other posters, you should check with the vet if it's ok to run with your puppy at this age. Even a mile seems a little extreme. It may end up causing problems for your lil' guy in the future.

The myth of "pocket" beagles and mini beagles seems to take on a life of its own. The fact of the matter is that I can breed a small 13 inch bitch to a smaller 15 inch dog or a 13 inch dog and get 15 inch beagles. My bitches generally weight about 18lbs and males 25. The only pocket beagles I see are those that don't even resemble the breed. Look like crosses with dachsunds as well. If you see a merling pattern you can bet its not purebred.

Beagles are one breed. we don't try for all 13's or all 15's what we breed for is quality,health and good temperament.

Thanks beagles1, I had no idea what the average Beagle weight is. I would guess the one at my house is 18-22 pounds but I didn't know if that was big or small, and like I have said before I am highly guessing she isn't the best quality to go by.

I didn't think they were a medium sized dog though (which I consider to be 35-50 lbs).

I started running with my border collie when she was four months old. I would walk and run, nothing hard and nothing constant, no different than her running and walking in the back yard on her own. She was fine, never had any problems. Now if you are running a hard straight mile to three miles then yes, you are going to do some dammage but it sounds like you are taking it easy.

A 35-50 lb beagle is a FAT beagle!!! Many do tend to end up these weights as pet dogs because they are such beggars. I think the PIG and beagle are closely related!! I just had a little 13 inch bitch get into a bag of food and eat until she was moaning.. rotten naughty dogs!! ;-) I love em though!

Our 15" beagle is 22 pounds. She isnt real heavy boned, but moreso than the hunting beagle are in general. Not sure what the 13" would weigh on average.
Pug standard is 14-18 pounds, though also based on boning, etc. 20 pounds is not unusual. Though I have seen Pugs that put an English bulldog to shame!

At 6 months, the puppy will not be full grown yet. On average it will be a year before they stop growing.

Its not uncommon two mix two breeds and get a larger version. Many of the genetics that cause our dogs to be small are based off of recessives that have been locked into the code of the breed. Break that in half and they tend to be a bit larger.

Puppies should not be on a excercise regime of any type, its very bad for growing joints and bones. Unlike children, puppies grow at an icnredable rate, litterly by the minute and hour what it would take a child months.

Beyond that, no dog is done at 6 months. Some dogs may gain height, but these are normally small toy dogs who again have a very fixed gene that helps with their size. Even a grown dog still continues to mature, gain musclke, normally you see bone expansion in areas such as shoulders and skull.

POCKET Puggle???? Oh Lord! ......


..... HOW can you get a "pocket" sized dog from a BEAGLE which on average weighs 40 lbs and a PUG which on avg. weighs around 15 and some high into the 20's! You dont EVER get a small dog from those two breeds!! Pocket is like saying "teacup" ... No breeder can say for sure how much a baby will weigh, especially not with mixes!

Not to argue, but everyone is assuming beagles are a lot bigger and weigh more than they really do. Beagles1 would know. I don't think I have ever seen a 40 lb. beagle, crap that is more the size of a springer spaniel.

No, I dont believe that any beagle "within the standard" is 40 pounds ...not close.
Though not all dogs are bred within their standard.

A beagle that is 13in or 15in that meets the standard isn't likely to be more than 25-30 tops. And that would be a BIG right on up to 15 inch male with BIG bone! I have seen obese beagles that weight this much.

A beagle/pug cross is likely to be gawky and leggy or bent legged like the pug with to much leg growth to accomdate the body. The ones I've seen look disproportionate. They also probably shed like buffalo and can be prone to chrondodystrophy and dwarfism issues as well as skin problems like generalized demodex and autoimmune disease. The recessive gene pool is scary!!!

Is your vet aware that your dog is running at such a young
age? I would suggest that you stop doing this immediately unless you are wanting a dog with hip dysplasia and bone problems. A pup should NEVER be made to exercise strenuously until the growth phase is over, in your case I would say about 8 months just to be sure. (I know that hip dysplasia tends to affect bigger dogs but some smaller dogs are also affected and any breed of dog can be affected if overexercised as a pup).

I am trying to retain my composure here but why on earth can't people do their homework BEFORE obtaining a pup?! I'd hate to think how many dogs end up with multiple health problems due to ignorance.

As for vets, they deserve a kick up the backside, it should be up to them to pass on such important information to puppy owners. They should have leaflets with all the relevant information and should hand out such to clients that come in with a pup.

Ok for the Last time!!! i DO NOT OVER RUN MY DOG....
SHE CONTROLS THE WALK.... SHE LETS ME KNOW WHEN SHE WANTS TO RUN OR WALK OR SNIFF THE GROUND OR PEE OR POOP!!!!
I DON'T WANT HER TO PULL MUSCLES OR DAMAGE ANY HIPS!!!
I personally said that I run 3 miles....
She DOESN"T!
I take her maybe for a mile walk/run....
She loves it... I live in an apartment so I run/walk her to the dog park! Where she sprints and runs around... I know I am not putting her health in any danger!!!
From the way she is now however, I know that in the future she will have no problem keepin up with me!!
Thanks for all the concern though!!

And yes, I did do my research and have asked the vet about EVERYTHING!!!! I would not jeperdize her health!
