fabulousleanne-- I think you have a great dog and there is not harm at exercising a puppy if it goes at its own pace. The people on this board are so very critical and this will be the last time I check it. What is sad is I just joined this board less than 48 hours ago and had a very interesting and disturbing discussion with Cassandra. Who by the way has much bigger problems of her own to worry about than someone exercising there dog.
The people on this board think they are so smart and are very critical and make new members feel like a outcast. Some do have great advice but not too many are welcoming. I am going to stick to my Pit bull boards. Where I was greeted with hellos and nice to meet you and great looking dogs. I have never met such a rude message board in my life. Most of the threads on here are off topic any way. I am not sure who runs this message board but they do not do it well or have enough time to check topics. I am not trying to hurt anyones feelings but this is a new members point of view.
If you look at dogs in the wild who walk miles upon miles a day -- domestic dogs they need that release more than most people know. I think all puppies and dogs would have a much happier life if they had an owner like you to get rid of there built up energy. That must be one happy and well adjusted dog. I know dogs love to lay on the couch but maybe more people take that as happy rather than depressed and board.
Keep up what you are doing and great looking puppy and call it what ever you want.
As to the people on this message board -- yall need to find a new hobby.

My vet told me I could start running my dogs at 4 months but not to use a weight harness till about 6 months and gradually add the weights. I have never had any health problems....

I do not think they were talking about exercising a dog strenuously. Did she not state that she was walking and running the dog at its own pace?? Hip displaysia is mostly hereditary but can be casued by injury. Your puppy is more prone to an injury from playing then exercise. There is no reson why you can not exercise a puppy at its own pace. I am a RVT that is a registered vet tech!!
Have you not heard of Mutt Strut and all kind of puppy marathons and walks for helping rescued animals. They walk for miles with puppies and the veterinarians at the walks do not say it is going to hurt or cause any bad side effects. She was not running the dog strenuously for a mile she was walking and running and souded like playing with the dog for a mile. She needs to start the puppy training early to get her ready for when she is able to be her jogging partner.

Now that she specified I don't think what she is doing is harmful, either. No more of a stress than throwing a ball for your pup until he gets tired, or letting him run and frolic in the backyard until he's tired. I imagine Leanne's dog is happy and content. I think probably too many pets, even with very well-intentioned and nice owners, do not get enough exercise to make them complete both physically and also stimulated and healthy mentally.

I agree 110% with Utopia. It is a shame that a new member joins for info and advise (like I first did) and all they are experiencing is the negativity, etc. I don't blame you one bit for not coming back. People are very rude on this site.

Hello,

I'm a brand new owner of a puggle named Baxter. We got him yesterday from someone who purchased him and didn't want to mess with him. He is 5 months old and absolutely adorable!

I just found this site and have been reading up on this type of dog. I may be asking for advice as we raise him.

He cried for about 5 minutes last night in his cage, but as soon as we moved the cage into our bedroom where he could see us, he stopped and fell asleep. So, all in all, that wasn't too bad. Now for the potty training.....

Very cute puggle, LeAnne! I don't know what I'd do if I had a dog that I could pick up without almost pulling my back! As for the rudeness factor on this forum, ask and ye shall recieve. I have yet had someone respond rudely or treat me badly. I think this is a great forum and it is full of differing opinions, which makes it interesting. If we were all the same, it would be pretty boring!

Actually about the running. You are suppose to exercise any type of dog no matter what breed they are. It helps then stay healthy and keep arthritis away. So on the topic on the lady running her puggle there is actually no problem with it. As long as you don't over run her and which she will more then likely tell you when she is tried. So don't listen to the stories about back problems running is good for every dog. Any type of exercise it good.

A "pocket Beagle" is not a breed of beagle it is a runt. Some people have tried to create a pocket beagle but really there is no such thing. A beagle is disqualified if under 13" or over 15" and there are beagles that are above and below the 13/15 mark so nothing to terribly special about that except maybe poor breeding.

My beagle 15" is about 30lbs. My moms beagles are much bigger- though they are fat (like 50lbs!).

**The reason you should not over-exercise a puppy has little to do with straining the muscles. You could be damaging the joints. Especially if this dog is running on pavement (road or sidewalk).**

Please do NOT over-exercise your dog. Running a short/mid distance is fine as is walking but ANYTHING in excess is not good for a growing puppy. Grass exercise is best since it cushions a bit. We used to take our beagle for long walks but tried to keep to grassier areas. We ran with her some too.

My beagle did not reach it's full size til about 9 months old. After that she filled out a bit by a few pounds (3lbs to be exact). Most dogs take around that time and even longer to reach full size so don't count on that 6 month point.

My basset at 6 months is only 25 lbs- she WILL be getting bigger.

Just copied this off beagle website. I knew there USED to be pocket beagles, but not anymore.

Pocket beagles were bred in the 1300's and 1400's and were said to be about 9" at the withers (shoulder). There is no such thing as a modern-day pocket beagle and in fact, the term "pocket beagle" has become synonomous with poor quality puppies bred for the pet market, and often sold to pet shops. Reputable (U.S.) breeders breed according to the Standard defined by the American Kennel Club, which includes two height varieties: not exceeding 13" at the withers, and not exceeding 15". The light bones, high ear sets and toyish heads that tend to go along with very small sized beagles are listed as faults.
In addition to not breeding according to the standard, the majority of "pocket beagle" breeders allow many of the common genetic defects (e.g., hip dysplasia and epilepsy) to be passed along. The result is often an unhealthy dog.

If you still want a small beagle, then consider the option of adopting a fully grown adult from a rescue or the pound. Most beagles are fully grown by about 1-1/2 years, and breeders can usually tell by about 8 months if a beagle will remain under 13".

A pocket puggle is basically the runt of the litter I have a 5 month old pocket puggle, she is only 7 pounds, and yes that is what they are called, they get between 10-15 pounds

I like him a lot better than I like most people. To you he's a dog. TO me he's an adopted son who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly. I have no problem with any of these. <
