I have six tetras in with my male Betta, along with an African Dwarf frog. Had a sucker fish too, but he died. :( Sometimes the Betta snaps at the tetras, but mostly he's cool. Depends on the fishie though, as we had another male Betta that was an absolute jerk, and ended up having to seperate him. Next time you go to whatever pet supply store you patronize, check out the community fish area. I think generally those guys are hospitable with a Betta. Good luck!
That is so wierd because when I went to the fish store they told me taht nothing could go in with the beta and that I could only put it in my large tank if I got one of those community tanks that attach to the top of your tank. No other fish can get in and the beta cannot get out.
I was always told as long as they are peaceful and not fin nippers that they can go in with bettas. The only real experience I have with fish is tetras. But always liked Bettas. But I would like more than one fish in a big ole 10 gal tank.
(I know that is not huge but with one fish in it it is)
Yes since my turtle got a new tank i now suffer from"Empty Tank Syndrom". I hope to cure that within a week. LOL.
LOL Rebel, I have suffered from the same, and am now periously close to having an overstocked tank. We have a couple neon tetras, and then a couple of whatever the common orange and blue ones are. It's funny because the neons hang out together on one side of the tank, and then the regulars on the other. West Side Story. LOL
I don't know if you are down with shopping at Petsmart, but they were having a sale on community fish, like buy 10 get 10% off, or something. Of course, that would be too many fish for your 10 gallon tank, but I don't always play by the rules when it comes to that. ;)
We actually don't have any large pet stores around here. Actually where I live i would have drive either 30 mins north or 30 minutes east to get to any pet store big or small. So my only optionis to save the fishys at Wal-Mart.
i may try the Betta with a few B;ood fin tetras and see how that goes. I have had the blood fin tetras before and they are pretty peaceful. And i know they are not fin nippers. Because i had them once a long time ago with some Fsncy fin Tetras and they did fine.
I agree with everyone on most community fish as long as they don't have long flowing fins that would entice any Betta for a fin snack. I would avoid Algea Eaters however as they can get pretty nasty when they are adults towards other fish.
There are a large number of fish that can go with the betta. You do have to avoid the fin nippers. Angel fish do well with them. I really hate it when the fish stores tell you they must stay by themselves. How sad for those fish in those little tiny bowls by themselves when it is unnecessary. When my fish die, they get buried, no toilet ceremony for them. I had a betta in my 50 gal. tank for years, he was with a mix of several fish. He was Ali(the fighting fish), and he was very sociable with me. Whenever my hands went in the tank to wash the sides down, he'd be there all in between my fingers. I love a big tank. Fish actually do have lives when given ample room. They all take there area of the tank. Some of them, especially the goldfish, just love riding the bubbles!
my mom has a betta fish named mr frekles:)... Well I always told her why don't you get him a gf and she told me she can't because her friend told her they kill each other or something like that... SO i asked her then how do they have more babies if they can't be together well I don't know(so can they have friends or not)... I did have a question though how can you tell if the fish is a male or female? we don't know what mr frekles his we jst named him that... sorry if interupted the main question at all... jst also wanted to know if they can have a little friend or not
The difference between the male and female betta is that the male usually has longer fins plus the beautiful colors to them, the female is shorter finned and dull in color. You can mix a male and female betta together, you just can't mix males in the same tank or they'll fight.
