Hello all. Im really worried obout my puppy. Obout 3am i woke to him throwing up and having dry heves i guess it would be called. I got up with him and brought him out to the living room where i could watch him and he started getting sick again and i cleaned him up and then put him back to bed. and then he was getting sick again. This morning he hasnt been sick the last time was obout 6 am but he did this obout 4 times threw out the night. he doesnt have diaraha. He seems to be ok alittle sluggish and he hasnt eaten yet this morning but sometimes he doesnt tho . I dont think he got into anything we have a cat so our house is pretty animal safe i thought. What could be going on? Should i call my vet and get him in? Im so worried obout him and dont know what to do to help him. He doesnt seem to be in any pain or anything like that. Can a puppy get sick like a human can get the flu ? My husband isnt feeling well either today. When do i know that it isnt normal and he needs medical attention? he did check out fine for his puppy well check like 2 weeks ago and is up to date on his shots. What could cause this to happen? should i be watching for him to pee so i know he isnt dehydrating? Please can some one help me? im so worried obout my baby that its giving me a ulcer. Should i just call the vet and bring him in just to be safe? This is my first puupy ever so i dont know whats normal and whats not. He was fine yesterday and playful and very active like he normally is. Today he isnt being sick but laying around more then he normally would. but still playful.. I just dont know whats normal and how long do you let it go for? If he isnt getting sick anymore does this mean hes probably fine? i cant wait to hear from some one.... im in desperate need of some advice. theresa
It isn't unusual for puppies to get sick. They sometimes get into things we don't see. My dog used to get sick all the time. She is now 2 but still throws up from time to time for no apparent reason.
I wouldn't worry so much today. If it continues, have the pup checked out. If he/she is acting fairly normal today, it will be fine. He/she most likely won't eat too much today...just let the tummy settle. If this continues, you might need to check into what food you are giving and if it is causing the problem.
How long have you had the pup? What food are you feeding, how much and how often?
I'm sure others will be along to give you some other help. It is better to call a vet and get a answer than to ask a bunck of strangers and get a lot of different answeres....
At the very least, please CALL your Vet and tell them what happened last night. Yes, puppies and dogs can catch little "bugs" just like people although they do not catch them FROM people. It could be something he ate, or a sort of 'flu', or something much more serious. Puppies can get dehydrated very quickly! Your Vet will probably want to see him.
Hello and thanks for the responses to my post. Ive had bentley for going on 3 weeks tomorrow. I feed him dry iams puppy food and ive been mixing some soft canned iams puppy food in with it. And i started doing that obout 3 days ago. Even tho ive done this off and on since i brought him home but i did go from the packs of soft food to the can .Do you think after 3 days this could be it? im thinking that iams in a pack or iams in a can is basically the same thing wouldnt it be? even tho one is chunky and one looks like pate' yuck lol He gets feed obout 3 times a day he really never finishes his food and goes back and eats when hes hungry but i do give him fresh food 3 times a day. and also fresh water threw out the day. Bentley is a small puppy and maybe weighs obout 3 lbs now if lucky. So hes never really eaten alot of food. He does get in the cats food and has done this from day one but when i see it i put uggs food dish up so bentley cant eat it. Could this of upest his belly? What should i watch for? if hes sleeping alot today will that be normal? He naps alot anyways as hes only going on 10 weeks old. Yes i will call my vet and just see what she thinks and maybe bring him in just to be sure. Hes just like my new baby and im worried. ive always been a worry wart even with my children so of coarse now the poor pup gets me watching him every minute of the day..lol So it will be normal for him not to want to eat? its kinda hit and miss with him he doesnt really have a set eating time he eats when hes hungry. im just worried obout him and dont want nothing to happen to him. can cats give dogs anything? my cat does have the standard shots needed hes a inside cat and dont go outside to pick anything up. but could this happen? well i do hope for some more advice it helps to know that this is some what normal and my poor little guy isnt going to die on me. thats how i feel that something bad is going to happen when im just over reacting .I just dont know whats normal and what isnt i guess. thanks again theresa
My puppy kept throwing up and I could not figure out why. I looked at the throw up and saw fibers in it. She loves stuffed animals and when she was playing with them the fibers from the fur was getting in her mouth and she would not be able to digest them. They would build up and she would throw up. I got rid of the stuffed dog and she never did it again.
When one of my babies got very sick at 8 1/2 weeks on Christmas Eve morning we took him to the vet right away - they tested for parvo and other parasites - everything came back normal but we thought he wasn't going to make it. Since he was having diahrra, they hydrated him subcutaneously and since he wouldn't eat, they gave us Nutrical - which perked him up right away.
Cooper is fine now, but after seeing how fast a small puppy can deteriorate, I would take yours to the vet if he doesn't seem better real soon.
Oh yeah, the day before he got sick my neighbor came to visit and she had just come from the horse stables - I asked my vet if that could have made him sick and she said that cross species contaminiation was not common between animals or humans. ???

hi again.. i did call my vet and he said it could be a few things but of coarse parvo was mentioned but he didnt think it was that, and then also he said it could be the cat food hes been eating. and told me how bad cat food is for puppys. but said if he wasnt doing any better by tomororw then to bring him in and they will check him out. he is playing more and being more like himself. still not eating or drinking like he should. but hes up and about chasing the cat and playing with his toys. but napping alittle more then usual. he has had his starter shots and is due tomorrow for the booster, but maybe its the cat food thats making his stomach upset.... i will let you know how this all turns out. the vet was concerned just because he only weighs 2.3 lbs 2 weeks ago when he was there so hes so small and he remembered him being a heathly spunky pup. so if he isnt back to his old self by morning i will take him in to the vet just to be on the safe side. but he does seem to doing better. thanks all. theresa
Problems during nursing and weaning that can cause puppy death include various bacterial and viral infectious diseases, as well as parasites. Parvovirus and herpes virus are primary culprits in puppy death between the ages of 2 to 12 weeks. Staphylococcus and streptococcus bacterial infections also play a significant role in the early demise of some puppies. hope these help to know what to watch for.
Testing for dehydration
You can test to see if your dog needs more fluids. Simply pinch a little of your dog’s skin between your fingertips. When you release it, the skin should quickly fall back into place. If the skin falls back slowly, chances are your dog is dehydrated. Tips to keep your dog hydrated
If you feel your dog has symptoms of dehydration, you can do a number of things to keep him cool.
* Move him out of the sun and into a cooler environment. * Provide him with fresh clean water. * Make sure your dog doesn’t drink the water too fast because it may cause vomiting, which will result in additional water loss. * If your dog refuses to drink water, you should check to see if anything is stuck in his mouth.
Finally, if for any reason your dog does become dehydrated, make sure that you visit a veterinarian a so that all necessary medical checks are made.

Its important to watch for diarrehea, vomiting, make sure hes drinking, or at least getting the wet food, which does have water in it, And make sure hes eating. When were examining dogs at work, sometimes we can test the dogs dehydration with a simple hand test. Take your right hand, use you thumb and your pointer finger, with those two fingers take a flap of scuff (loose skin on the back of the neck)Don't hurt him, be gentle. But almost like you are going to pick him up that way. (But don't pick him up. When you have that fold of skin in between those finger, pull away from the dog a bit and twist the skin, by rotateing your hand (pinky to 12) And let go quickly. (God I hope that sounded right) If all the skin goes back quickly to its original position, hydration is good. If it sort of stays there, and slowly makes its way back, the puppy is dehydrated and needs fluids. We can also use our finger on the gums, if you push into the pink of the gums and remove your finger quickly and the white goes back to pink quickly (thats good) If it doesn't (Thats not so good) If the puppy is drinking and then immediately vomits it back up, he has to stop drinking and get fluids at the vets, so he won't vomit and make himself more dehydrated.
Hello again. Bentley seems to be doing just fine now. He must of got into something or i am thinking it was the cat food that i found out is very bad for a puppy. I didnt think it was good for him but not dangerous as the vet told me. But he is back to eating and being his old self again. Gosh when these little guys get sick it really makes you worry, just like if it was one of your own babies. Thank you all for your help. It helps knowing you can find help on this discussion board. I do see alot of people are really mean and hateful people tho it seems. Im always worried obout posting because if i spell a word incorrectly or because i dont have a pure breed dog. It does sound odd but really i feel that if you dont have a pure breed dog no one really wants to chat with you or help you. Or gosh for bid spelling is off or your sentences run long or with out a period, my stressed out when i post wondering what people are going to say obout my posts. I guess im new here and dont know much about this site or what its really here for. All i know tho is there are a hand ful that seem very friendly and nice regardless of my re-posts or whatever its called. I do thank the ones that have seem to gave me some advice here and there when needed. I apprecaite it. theresa
glad to hear that your baby is better now. i would have guessed the cat food. my little frenchie pup got through the gate. i found her in the cat food. later on she threw up twice, there were small chunks of cat food in it. she was still playful and active and was fine after that. i feed her the royal canin puppy and she hasnt had a problem with that. when she gets a little bigger i will switch her to the natural balance that i feed the others. we spend 99 % of our time in the family room and the dogs have access to that, our bedroom and master bath. if they are loose in the entire house, they find things to get into. the girls rooms are like a puppy feast for them ! lol
Glad to hear your puppy is doing fine! Not everybody on here cares if a person can spell or not. Not everyone has a purebreed. I happen to have 2 mixed breeds that I love to death! Keep us updated on the puppy and some pics would be nice too!
