Well the pups are showing again this weekend after being home since Thanksgiving. I am meeting the handler at the show tomorrow morning since the show is northeast of us and she lives about 3 hours west of us. I am bathing and trimming this evening but I can't do nails, and they are long. I took them to a groomer on Monday last, spent $75.00 for 2 dogs and she took off less than I do. I am not afaid to handle the dogs, heven knows I handle 1,200 lb horses all the time but I am a bit shy of doing nails, guess it is because I quicked one dog. Usually they are at the handlers house and she and her husband normally do their nails.
Quess I am going to let them show tomorrow as is and then the handler, who is staying with us for the weekend, will do them tomorrow evening for Saturday and Sunday. I would not feel so bad but it is a 4 point major all 3 days. Between the nails and the rusty dogs my fingers are crossed, wish us luck.
do you have a dremel ? you can use that to file down the dogs nails. you can usually get a lot more off with a dremel then you can with a regualr nail clipper and you are less likely to make them bleed with one also.
I know what you mean with black nails. I am able to clip them but for the shows the judges like to see stubs and the only way you can do that is with a dremel. I try to dremel them but they fight me and my wife is no help in holding them down
I could grind them if the dogs would cooperate - but I'm sure you know what I went through. I clipped them as short as I could, I can see a dot in the middle of the nail so I know I'm right at the quick and I also know that grinding doesn't bleed as much as you quarterize the quick with the grinder, but I can't do that, hold the dog down and fight the pulling foot at the same time.
I do have a grooming table and the dogs actually back right off the table and almost hang themselfes so I gave up and just clipped them but they should be shorter.
Well it is after 11 and they are finally all groomed and looking prety as I could make them so the rest is now up to them.
I have dobermans. I have a handler who shows them for me as that is not my thing. I actually find dog shows boring but I do enjoy watching my dogs in the ring, the transformation that takes place they just know it is time to perform and prance around like little pressies.
I have a question for you. Our handler is driving in tonight and staying with us as the show is local for us. She called from her cell phone on the road she forgot the liver home so I picked up some at Foodtown. How do I prepare it? I think ya boil it don't ya?
Ours have actually all adjusted very well, to the grinder, and sit nicely for us on our laps to have it done. Of course the Mini's are much easier to hold...lmao....thinking you would need an extra set of hands to grind the unwilling doberman..hehe
Yea, boiling it makes it way too wet....a mess to handle, gets all over your clothes, hands...yuk I answered in the other thread as well.
Allie, what breed do you show???

Day 1 is in the books and my male who I didn't expect to do anything today took 2nd in the open class and my female who I thought had a chance took 4th. There were 48 dobies competing today. I know this judge had his mind made up as if not before the dogs were entering the ring. The male he picked is the same one I would have pinned but the female, I didn't think she even belonged in the same ring with most of the dogs there. Not saying my female should have wone because I thought she should have come in 2nd and the dog I thought should have beaten her didn't even place. Based on how he placed the males ya think ya know what he was looking for in a dog and he made a complete flip for the females, go figure.
To my suprise my male took a 1st place against the same dogs as yesterday plus a couple more, however, I am dissapointed as my female took 4th again. Although there were more bitches than yesterday she lost to the same 3 as yesterday. I am a bit suprised I would have put her 2nd amongs them. The bitch that wone although she looked good standing there she moved lousey, she didn't single track and she paddled in the back on one side. I know the handler of the winning bitch and even he was suprised.
congrats !!!!!! are they showing again tomorrow also ?
are you by any chance going to the harrisburg show the weekend of april 15th ? there are going to be a lot of ASD's there that weekend for a regional (?) on saturday and it is a supported show on sunday. saturdays show is going to be televised by animal planet. i am planning on going. i am looking forward to it.
Just had dinner with my handler, she was telling me that two of the big name handlers in the doberman world filed a protest against todays judge with the on site AKC rep.
Now my male beat one of them yesterday and both of them today. My female lost to both of them yesterday and today. But again they both had about 10 dogs each that they handled in the different classes.
Yes Scout. We are back at Rockland Community College showing again tomorrow. I don't yet know my handlers schedule for april, however, harrisburg is in the area she shows
And yes Scout my female beat Betty's dog both days, ya know the loud mouth from the Sussex show

that would be cool if you could go to the harrisburg show. my breeder moved from florida to ohio so i emailed her today and asked if she was going to be at harrisburg and she is. we are going to try and connect there and she wants to see scout. right now icy is picking apart scouts conformation for me so i can learn a little more about the breed conformation wise. i am also hoping to pick some peoples brains at the show too but they might be too busy to help me out.
yes i remember the loud mouth lol ..... its people like those that keep me away from wanting to show.
Spoke with my handler this weekend she winterized her motorhome as only one of her clients was showing through the winter and she traveled by her van and stayed in motels.. She will put her schedule together and get it to me in the next week or two. I don't know the dates of Harrisburg but if there is enough time to register when I get her show list I will as she usually shows there.
yes i posted pics of her on pyrs forum and she is critiquing them for me. trying to help me develop an eye for things. i've asked scouts breeder a few times to do the same with scout so i could learn but she never would. maybe she was afraid i would dump her or something i dont know. never in a million years would i , i just want to learn so i am excited i will finally be able to see an ASD at a show !!!
the show dates are April 13-16 th. i think it is called the blue grey cluster ? i dont know ... none of that stuff means much to me. the show is listed on info dog tho that muxh i figured out today so i could get driving directions ;)
