Hello again... Can giving your puppy a bath to often be harmful in anyway? Can you give them a bath once a week? Bentley has longer hair (bichi-poo) and it starts to feel tacky and his little curls turn into dreed locks.. lol When we give him a bath hes so soft and smells wonderful, but after a week he starts feeling tacky and doesnt smell that good. Yes i do use a puppy shampoo on him when i do give him a bath. Boy does he hate it tho Plus he gets poo in his fur around his bun . Which i am taking him in to get the hair trimed back there as i read in a book that im suppose to do anyways. I read some of the posts awhile back obout this and read that over bathing can cause dry and irriated skin. But how often is to often? Is once a week to much? He is brushed daily but still his fur just isnt the same still potty training also so hes a little smelly some days.. LOL If anyone knows alittle more on the subject i would enjoy your comments and help. Thanks again for your help... Theresa
No, once a week is not too much, provided you are using the proper shampoo. My mom has a shit-zu she bathes once a week. I bathed my chi once a week and I bathe my Aussie and border collie every other week. I use Lambert Kay's oatmeal and baking soda shampoo. Granted some dogs skin cannot handle it so you'll have to see how your dog does.

There are dog shampoos out there that will say for frequent use. The key here is to find a good product that is not going to dry out the hair. There must be a groomers supply around that carries good quality products. A good conditioner is a good idea once in a while.

My old trainer told us that once a week is too much. It dries out their coat and skin. She said twice a month is ideal. I know, I give Merphy a bath and he's so nice and soft and smells good. But after a week, he stinks like a puppy. They do make puppy cologne that I use on him. Its not that strong (or else I couldn't use it).
I've also been mixing in a teaspoon of peanut oil in with his food in the morning, and this is supposed to make his coat better (and get him to eat his food).
