I would first like everyone in the class to stand up. Close your eyes. Picture yourself as a dog. Now, I would like for you all to BLUE. BLUE. What's the matter with you.... I said to BLUE. BLUE! BLUE!!! Come on... BLUE-BLUE-BLUE-BLUE-BLUE!!!! All the other dogs know how to do it.. why cant you? Huh? I said.. to BBLUUEEE!!! Alright.. now lets take it from a different approach. (puts dog into sitting positiong while saying BlUE). Perhaps if I showed you how to BLUE, you'd get it? (dog sits when say BLUE). Why didnt you get it before? Dont you understand what I'm saying? Frankly, no. You dont know what I'm saying. You cant speak English, and I cant speak Dog. Can we? There are many different techniques out there, on how to train a dog, but I will only go into one today. With my dogs, I used the NILIF method. It is based on using positive reinforcement, and using a dog's natural tendency's against them. This was refered to me when I was having "alpha" problems with my dog, Kiba; not listening, barking and pawing at me for attention, jumping on the furniture, not listening, etc. What is she trying to tell me? In the wild, alpha would be the highest ranking dog in the pack, the other wolves follow their lead and do what is told of them. This, is what Kiba was doing. She was telling me what to do, and I was doing it. She had me very well trained. It was time, now, to assert MY dominance. First, you have to be in control of everything. You iniate when it's time to eat, to play, going outside, attention. A key to getting your way, is ignoring them when they are exhibiting bad behaviors. If he jumps up on you to be petted, cross your arms and look at the ceiling, walk away even. When he's stopped and calmed down, call him over and pet him. He bring a toy to you, pawing at your arm unrelentlessly. Ignore him. Even pushing him away will give him the attention he wants. Once he's stopped, go grab another toy and initiate play and play til your hearts content. Remember that you are in control! Have him sit, lay down, speak, or any other command to earn his reward; whether it being your love or attention or going outside. NILIF does NOT mean that you have to give less attention to your dog. The main thing is WHO initiates the attention.
Any thoughts or opinions about it are appreciated. Thanks!!
