Hi. my puppy Bentley keeps eating my cats food. I watch ugg like a hawk so when hes done i can pick his bowl up. But apparently i look away for a minute and the puppy has ate it. Bentley would much rather eat soft cat food ( Friskies soft packs) Then his own soft puppy food ( i mix it half hard and half soft) Why does he keep going for the cat food? I tried to trick him and put his food in the cat dish and he wouldnt eat it , he knew that it wasnt uggs food. When i had mentioned this to the vet on the phone a few weeks ago when bentley had been throwing up i thought well wondered if this could be the cause. The vet told me that cat food and dog food are two differnt kinds of food and it was some words i didnt understand..LOL I know it isnt good but is it harmful? Bentley even goes for uggs hard food also. They do eat in seperate rooms / Ugg is in the kitchen were hes been for 2 years and we put Bentleys food dishes in the dinning room by his pen. Is this normal? and what should i do? He doesnt seem to get sick from it anymore if that time he was sick was from cat food. He loves it. lol Please if anyone knows anything obout this please let me know. And he doesnt get it everytime i am quicker then him and now everyone is on to picking up uggs dish when we see him walk away so Bentley cant get it. Theresa
Dont they make a dog friendly cat food??LOL Why would he want to eat it? I find it werid that he would rather eat cat food them dog food. When really its yucky flavors, salom and tuna and stuff like that. Doesnt seem like a pup would like that. I will just have to be on top of ugg when he eats and take it away as soon as hes done. I cant move uggs feeding dishes thats were he has ate for years. Is hard cat food just as bad? or is it all cat food? thank you for your help. i do appreciate it. theresa
Cat food makes a good treat but it is not for daily consumption. Sure, many dogs won't show side effects, but why risk it and frankly, if you look at it in a money viewpoin, cat food tends to be more expensive per pound then dog food so you are also wasting it, putting to much portean, to many calories, and etc into your dog.
Prehaps a gate at the ktichen will ehlp? Most dogs absoutly adore cat food, so its quite common. I gate off the cats, its easier, I don't have dogs sucking down expensive kitty food and works better all around.
My problem is my cats stealing dog food, chuckle. I try to nip that in the bud, to much fiber.
Your best bet to keep the dog from eating the cat's food is to put the cat's food up off the floor, like on a counter or bar, where the dog can't get it but the cat can. Or you can start feeding the cat on a schedule a few times a day, give the cat an oportunity to eat, then pick up the food off the floor all together, so you're not leaving it in the dish on the ground all day long. Very few people can actually train their dogs to leave the cat food alone, its best to just remove the temptation all together than continually reprimand your dog, which doenst really work because very time the dog gets a single bit of cat food it is rewarding itself.
Dogs like cat food for quite a few reasons, including "The grass is greener" syndrome and the fact that cat food has a a very strong taste and smell. But it is definitely not good for a dog to eat cat food, for the reasons mentioned. The two animals have very very different dietary requirements.
well i dont have any pups but my older dogs will do the exact same thing so my cats dish is up off the floor where they cant get to it and the cat has to jump up to get to it course gives her fat lazy butt some exercise as well. lol. and i thought the same thing about thats where she has eaten well if she wanted her food she was gonna have to jump for it cause it wasnt gonna be on the floor anymore. cats will adjust believe me. they will look at ya like are ya outta your mind ya moved my dish, and i looked back at her and said yup its up there and if ya wanna eat you will jump your old fat butt up there cause i aint movin it.
