I know perhaps it's silly to think I can post on a public board and get responses for ways that I can get funding for MY rescue organization, but hey... you never know until you ask!
Long story short, I am volunteering for a rescue, they are very small... they have rescued dogs, but are getting more into the farm animal rescue line... and I am trying to help them get donated goods/funding. I am not a professional and have no idea what I am doing! (Owner knows that!)
I am searching the planet for available grants, as well as racking my brain for ideas of how to get local donations. They need everything. Fencing, feeding troughs, vet care, food, etc...... local fence companies won't donate. We need hay, dog food, a whole other building, and I am just wondering if anyone has had a success story soliciting help from anyone that they would care to share with me. Not necessarily names, but TYPES of places, etc...
I know, my question isn't even very specific... it's so hard!!! :) Hugs to everyone who has dealt with this for a long time, I am just learning. At this point, I am just brainstorming. THANKS.
One technique that works good for our local PAWS program is educating children. Schools and individual teachers welcome visitors that can come in and volenteer time in the schools , even a few minutes in the class room to spread news about donating and helping needy animals.
Our 3-5th grade kids had put a yard sale together for the pets. They have food drives to collect food items and other much needed items, you'd be surprised. And then then they get a little assembly together and tell all they rasied and did and each class gets a little prize for the most collected. A few get thier parents to drop them off for community service, brushing, walking and playing with the shelter dogs. To see a child sit and read to a shelter dog can warm anyones heart. Thier doing each other good!
Our youth is the future and if you can plant a seed in a child your helping future pets.
That's a great idea, about the kids. My local paper puts a little article and a picture of kids whenever they donate money to the SPCA. If you're rescuing farm animals, you might want to contact your local 4H clubs to see if they would be willing to help.
You could do a fund raiser, and have a petting zoo or meet the pets kind of thing-bunnies, chicks, ducks, turkeys, calves, sheep, goats, horses...
One of my local shelters does a dog day in the park every spring and every fall. People sign up to walk their dogs (or walk a shelter dog) and get money for that. They've had a kissing booth in the past, where you can buy puppy kisses for $1. (I thought that was really cute!) They also let you "rent" a shelter dog. You pay I think $5 for 1/2 hour, and you can walk a shelter dog around the park for that amount of time. It raises money for the shelter, plus, it gives the dogs exposure.
If you work outside the home, put a box or 2 in the lunch room where you work, with a sign for donations. I did this, and got 3 huge boxes of donations-everything from food to kitty litter to leashes, blankets and towels....
For our 4h group we got really cheap picture frames and made up a framed paper that said this business has donated to whatever we were raising money for. You jsut go and say if you donate an amount of ten twenty and so on we will hang this here and have your name on a board at our annual meeting (or something like that, even t shirts or something). If one store does it generally all around them do it.
If you are lloking for food donations then try local feed shops. Some will give almost old food at a cheap price. Some barns may donate it if they ahv ehad it a wjiel also. I don't like donated hay jsut because I'd assume it was bad. But you could try saying you would advertise for them too.
I have herd of rescues doing a BBQ to get donations for the place.
Also you could do a rescue audtion. Find a auction guy and aks if he can set it up for you. It works well around here. They start at the price it would cost to adopt and it goes up from there. They usualy end up adopting out all the animals they have there and get alot of money.
You coudl also try walmart. sometimes they will donate stuff to palces. The one down here will donate toys for santa to give out to the kids at the school and things like that.
You may be able to get on the news after that you will probly get called by places wanting to help
Wow. First of all, doxielover... that is very nice of you!
I know that these guys sell some stuff on ebay. They also have co-sponsored spay and neuter clinics, etc.. All those ideas were very good ones, and I appreciate all the help. I agree in the children idea... my older sister is a first grade school teacher, so I think I may be able to get something lined up with her district, or something. Maybe a field trip? I dunno if the district would go for that! lol..
ANyway... I am saving this list of ideas, so thank you very much from everyone, and doxie........ I will talk to the lady and think about your offer. It just makes me all warm inside knowing you would offer that. There are some real cutesy high-end shops around here that may be willing to sell things like that for a LOT of money, for the cause. I too, am quite crafty, so have been thinking of things like that that can be done.
