How does everyone feel about it? I never really thought about it before..but I was reading an ad about making it illegal. I was wondering what your thoughts were?i know there are 1000s of unwanted dogs in shelters across north america...they need homes and are already alive...
" Some vets will abort (perform a spay) up to term. This is a very personal call and something to consider heavily: if you would abort animals that don't have homes rather than bring them into the world and let them eventually take up more homes from animals that are already born, and if you are, at what point, if any, would you consider the pregnancy too far along for abortion." I agree with the owner of the website.. that puppies aren't able to live outside the uterous til 3 days of birth. The mother and babies develop "pregnancy" in the last week or two ..and i wouldnt abort at this time. THe babies are already moving and the mother develops a "nesting" behavior. This, and with pre-labor going on,emotionally, i would not be able to abort .
Sorry, for me, I would never do it. We as humans should not have the right to decide which animals live or die. We have over stepped our boundaries on that. IMO I believe that prevention is a much better tool then abortion. I believe in life at conception and therefore find it wrong to murder innocent babies. If you have ever seen a mom deliver way too early and you see these young tiny babies that you know will not survive, yet they are squirming around and fighting so hard to live, you would not be able to EVER do that intentionally. Aborting animals will not stop people from letting their pets get pregnant, only a real hard nation wide(world wide) plea to spay and neuter and also stricter laws for those that do not, THAT is the only way that animals in the shelter will stop dying. Just my take on the subject but unless there is a serious major medical issue that would ultimately kill the mom and the babies, that is the ONLY time I see that as an option. Otherwise, you suck it up, fix the mom and the babies and try to prevent it from happening again.
I've heard of it before. I just didn't know if it was common or not. I just don't know if I could ever do that..... (I don't plan to be a breeder or get a dog that is not fixed) Has anyone here before? Wouldn't it like mess with the emotions of the animal?
I don't want to get into a prochoice/prolife discussion please, just wondering.
Up to about 5 weeks pregnant I would have to say yes! When they are in their last 2 weeks or so, then I wouldn't but, I would have no problem with someone who felt it was necessary. WE all have to make our decisions about our pets for what is best for the animal. If you have a bitch that was bred to the neighborhood mutt or mutts and you can spay her at 2 weeks PG why not? The world doesn't need 10 more big dogs to fill up the shelter. Cats especially I have no problem with it. They can overpopulate quickly. I have spayed 2 pregnant cats that were dropped off here.
I am for it if it is EARLY enough (within the first FEW weeks), but that is often not the case. Most uninformed pet owners don't realize until it is far far later than that. Then I am NOT for it, unless the mothers life is in DANGER. There is definately a point where it is just wrong to do.
this is something i have to deal with at work ... especially in the next months coming up as it is breeding season soon for cats.
knowing how many animals are already out there that need homes already and are euthanized everyday i feel it is much more humane to euthanize them in utero then to bring them in to this world and give them hope only to have to have them potentionally live in a shelter environment only to wind up killing them a some point.
it is extremely difficult to do them when they are close to full term and some of the vets i work with will not do them if they are noticeably that far along pre anesthesia.
i hate to play god but until people wisen up and stop being so friggin irresponsible it is always going to be a problem .
What kills me is the people who aren't for it in animals, but will support a woman's right to choose. HHhhmmmm that's odd...save the unwanted animals, but kill human souls, when the abortion society has made it near impossible to find children for people who Want them but can't have them. I have no problem with terminating animals, but do not believe in it for people. We were created in the image of GOD
I actually have the exact same views for people too. I think it is just fine in the beginning, but come on now, you should know in the first trimester what you want to do, or you should live with the consequences. I know I could feel movement by 4.5-5 months. There does become a point that it is wrong for animals or people UNLESS the mother's life is in danger and then you should never put a mother before the child unless it is at her request.
I try to look at this from many different angles because I have a cat that I bottle fed from 1 day old that a neighbor brought to me. I tried to have her get the rest of the litter but apparently she had more important things to do. The rest of his brothers and sisters met an awful fate being squished under a matress I later found out. The guy was going to put them in a bag and slam them up against a brick wall because he didn't like where mom had her kittens.
Apparently matresses are the lastest thing in lawn decor.
So, would I rather have people like that abort a litter instead of waiting until momma cat "pops" then throw them in a plastic bag and into the trash, or drown them, throw them up against a wall...... Yes.
I think its fine as long as its done in the first few weeks and not after that. I dont want to snuff out new born puppies or kittens, I sure would'nt take them out the womb to do it. But thats a personal choice and i do realize so many are pit to death every year. Its not a nice world for animals or humans. I'm ready for the second coming arent you!
"Sorry, for me, I would never do it. We as humans should not have the right to decide which animals live or die."
Are you a Vegan? If not you make this desicion every day of the week.
Do you believe you should be allowed to humanely euthanize your pets when its that time? Or be forced to maintian its heart beat until its body literally rots? If you start putting these type of human limitation on animals you open up a very DANGEROUS door. How would you like it if a vet told you you HAD to pay for the treatment for your dog or cat, even if it was going to cost you thousands and thousands of dollars and not make his life any more worth living? Because you don't have the right to decide which animals live or die?
Be thankful we DO have that right and we shoudl fiercly defend it.
I would rather see a litter of unwanted dogs or cats aborted then a 2 year old dog killed because a cute puppy was available. I am sorry but I feel that the first job of shelters/rescuers should be to place the existing dogs and cats and not bring more into the world because puppies are easier to adopt.
It's stupid to argue over when it is or it isn't too late.
Do you know at how quickly a rate dogs/cats develop inside the womb? If you did, the majority of you saying "Well it's ok If you do it before..." would change your mind.
Some could argue that it becomes "life" the moment it becomes infused with blood. So, let's not get righteous over the cut off limit.
Tell him http://www.catster.com/pet_page.php?i=180029&j=t that you would rather his family get destroyed AFTER they took their first breath and went through the pain of delivery, then later on in a pregnancy while it could still be done humanely.
They say that the most pain a creature will ever endure in it's life is being born.
And I would much rather see an animal humanely put down then going cage crazy waiting to die because a wire cage and a concrete floor is the only thing it has ever had to call home.

HUH? What world are you living in. Last I looked there are PLENTY of orphaned unwanted infants ALL OVER the world. THOUSANDS of them in orphanages or being left to die in hospitals or abandoned because they were female and not male (as some countries prefer male offspring).
As for "abortion" causing a baby shortage. No, I don't think so. EDUCATION is what is causing an unwanted baby shortage. Women are persuing careers and putting themselves on birth control, and either waiting until later in life to have babies or not having any at all.
