Hello all, i just found out after some one had posted that maybe the iams puppy food (hard and soft) could have beet pulp in it, well of coarse i looked and sure enough it does, so all these other things ive been trying really isnt working because im not getting rid of the beet pulp i would assume. So is there a good hard, and soft brand of small breed puppy food that doesnt have beet pulp and also added color? His face is always so wet from the tears and it does seem better then before but still not cleared up in anyway. The vet said he didnt have a eye infection and that some breeds just have the over active tear glands as bentley does, and really nothing you can do obout it as in meds . I have tried all the products you can buy for tear stain and it dont work. I just heard yogurt a teaspoon of yogyrt will help tearing? his face is soaked most of the day and there isnt no hair in his eyes to cause it so its something else, Hes such a cute pup to have to have this staining on his face and im looking for anything that will help! thanks again. theresa
Yes he does have over active tear glands, this is what the vet had told us. And it is the rusty , red color tear stains and this is what im trying to stop or at least not make it so bad, and i was told that the beet pulp could be causing this still after ive switched to bottle water and also make sure nothing has added color but i had no idea obout the beet pulp. so i have to find a differnt food to feed him. What is beet pulp used for? why would they add this to the food? They will add anything wont they? I will check on these foods you listed and research and see what one will work best for my little guy, He is almost 4 months old and still prefers the soft pack food i put some hard in with it... Also i heard that teething could also cause excess tearing? is this true? theresa
I dont htink teething causes it but Im not sure.Do you think he would eat the food if you just soaked the dry in water or chicken broth? I have never had a dog with teary eyes btu my trainer said beet pulp will make it worse and that rusty color so thats why I told you.Im not sure why they put beet pulp in some foods.I dont think its a nutritional value, but Im not sure. Most dog foods do add anything they can.
Also he doesnt have to have small breed IMO that is just a ploy for money.Alot of the all natural foods have all life stages and that will do him fine.
If you have just one little doggy you could consider feeding him homemade foods, boiled chicken, liver, lean meats, vegtables, brown rice and such. I'm thinking about doing that for Napoleon. Or atleast including it in his diet for flavor and diversity. I'm reading up in that type of feeding now.
Ive never really thought obout feeding him chicken and rice ect, is this what raw means? i use to see alot of posts obout raw diets, I thought that it was feeding your pet raw meats and i didnt like that.. UGH! Im not a big meat person myself but my family is.. But raw uh no. How do you prepare the foods you cook for your dog? like a chicken breast and just boil it and plop it in his food bowl? cut up with rice? SO when you start feeding him this kind of food you dont give the puppy food anymore right? I do give him some of my chicken and he loves it and other meats we have. He really doesnt seem to be into his puppy food anymore and he is really into the cat food for some reason. hard and soft. I did try when i first got him just putting water in his hard food he didnt seem to care for it, i guess i thought i was giving him good stuff by getting him soft pouch food and i do put out hard food and he wont eat it. But i am going to try putting the chicken broth in with the hard and also i do have some beef broth in the cupbaord im going to try. Gosh i really would try anything to get rid of these tear stains, believe me i try everything and some things work some what but not like they should. The last few nights ive been washing his tear stains with peroxide and its lighten them up alot. But i just see all these white dogs that dont have the tear stains so of coarse i feel like im doing something wrong. But if some one could tell me alittle bit more obout this chicken and rice and other food diet i would love to learn some things. Is there a web site on this? Is this diet called something so i can find out more about it? I do apprecaite all your help. Believe me i do listen and try everything. My husband is sick of hearing me say i was told to do this and that and were not suppose to do this and that, and he tells me to stay off this web site ... lol he thinks i think i know more then him,. and i would say i now do with all the things i learn from this site. thanks again theresa
Nap has tear stains too and I dont really care for it. And because his face is fluffy it sticks and looks bad. Duchess is white but a pitbull with differnt hair and she never has tear stains. So yeah, it does bother me too see Nap with them but I assumed it was a poodle thing. Thats why I iniatially wanted a chocolate poodle so you couldnt see the tear stains but I feel in love w/ Nap and now I love him and will just have to wipe them away and deal with it like you..the best I can.
You can feed him diets that are boiled instead of raw.Gunny is the person to ask about feeding homecooked foods. The diet needs to be 75% meat and then veggies and fruits and some nuts if you want. The veggies need to purereed.
You need to do alot of research before you feed it.Some companies like natural balance make diets that are called BARF diets and you can have them shipped.
I think if you put him on a really good food he would be fine. Some good brands are natural balance, slid gold, merriks (the dogs loved the canned merrick),canidae, wellness, and innova.
I just picked up some wet food of merricks. It had buffalo, venison, trout and potatoes and carrots adn zuccini. So that stuff is very healthy.
Can you get this merriks at petsmart? Or do you have to order this kind on line ? About how much does this merrick cost? ( money isnt a issue) just wondering how much does this cost? And this comes in hard food and soft canned? I would really like to try this. Could you please let me know where i can find it at?? If it is on line where can i find it at? thanks again for the help, its very helpful. I cant wait to get this and try it.
while diet may play a part, more important is to have his eyes thoroughy checked by an eye doc to rule out bigger problems. snoop was Dx as having large globes, adn dry eye with a bit of irritation which was causing a ton of tear production. he was on antibiotics adn an eye lube gel for a while, and has been doing great since. on cold, or windy, or bad allergy, days, his eyes may water, but a dry shirtsleeve cleans that right up. the color of tears is due to a naturally occoring protein in the body. diet may help this, may not. my doc said the jury was still out. i didnt change snoop's diet and the eyes, once cleared up with the aid of meds, havent looked that way since.
i would have a thorough look over by a specialist before i jumped to the diet conclusion. either wat the stains are usually just aesthetic and do no harm if the area is kept clean. unless you have a hairy faced dog you could end up with yeast infections from the moisture there. so the hair shoudl be kept short in that area.
Merricks comes in wet and dry.I havent bought the dry because my guys are on canidae dry and are doing great and its a lil less expensive and I have bigger dogs than you.Haha Now the merricks wet food is $1.79 here and we get it at the local food store. You may have to have it requested at petsmart, they do that up here. You will just have to check.
If they dont have that Wellness is really good and so is canidae, both of those brands come in wet and dry.Just check around and tell me what you find....
also like Eskie said you may wnat him checked out by a specialist, ask your vets opinion.
Go to www.merrickspetcare.com to see where you can find it in your state. They have a store locator on there.
I hope this helps!

Good luck, we tried all that with Baxter (Bichon Frise) and it didn't really work. I finally ordered angel's glow, and we're ending our second bottle and it does work. It's pricey, and Baxter wont eat it unless I mix it with peanut butter, but his face is whiter by the day. I know it's cosmetic, but I also know that now he gets a lot more positive attention from strangers than he did before. I had so many people thinking my PUPPY was an old old dog. :( There are pics on his dogster page that if you look carefully you can see. --Of oucrse the pics I tended to save were the ones that DIDN'T show the tear stains too badly. http://www.dogster.com/pet_page.php?j=t&i=236435
This is Bentley my bichon-poodle mix, just after a bath.He is almost 4 months old next week. His tear stains arent that bad but enough to keep me trying new things to try and remove them. The vet did check his eyes and said he had over active tear glands , he said most dogs do in this breed (poodle or bichon? he didnt say) and exsplained there are tests and sugerys that can be done by a eye doctor or who ever he was but he said hes never really seen a good out come as in it comes back and its just as waste of money. It seems the peroxide is lightening it some. so thats good, but not enough tho i would like for him to have a cute white face and not these stains. So i am willing to try a new food and see if this could help. It couldnt hurt. Anyways with the beet pulp i really need to find something else . Im trying everything else and would be senseless not to change his food when this could be causeing some of the problem. Im going to get on that merrick web site and find out alittle bit more obout it and see if my local petsmart carries it. thanks for all your help.
Ps His face does look alittle better then this pic , i started using the peroxide about 3 days ago and it has lightening it about 70% but will it ligten it all the way? I have heard of the peroxide mm and cornstarch i havnet tried that yet, but thinking obout it. Just trying to work right now from the inside out.

I just bought the angel glow on line. I cant wait to get it. I hope it works.... Some one had posted a reply a week or so to this tear staining problem i had and she siad that she had her dog on this angel glow and her dog got a iti is this common? Im not sure if it was caused from the angel glow but just wondering. Gosh i hope it arrives quickly. Ive tried all the other gimmicks out there and did hear obout this but thought it was just anther ploy to get you to buy their product, but the pic they show before and after are amazing! Of coarse i will post some new pic of bentley when i start and when hes taking it and cross your fingars and see if it works... Anyone else try this angel glow? My only worry is he wont take it but i read differnt ways to give it so something will have to work. But im still going to switch his food. Guess im so new at the puppy thing i thought iams was the best you can get.. lol theresa
To answer your question about Merrick. You can't buy it from Pet Smart or Petco . Go to their website and they'll have by state where you can purchase their food.I purchase mine from a small mom and pop store .It's pricey .I by mine in the small 5 pound bags as it's easier to store. I usually buy about 3 at a time and it costs me about 34.00 depending on the varaties I buy at that time. Before feeding Merrick I was feeding Canidae which I also like .Even my hubby who doesn't notice things like the dogs coat said since they've been eating Merrick how healthy and soft their coats feel. The food is that much better then Canidae and has no beet pulp.
