So yesterday I was walking to go and check the mail and I found a crawfish in my driveway trying to find water. It was was he was tired and looked like he would not make it much farther. I was shocked that where is was at he did not get hit my a car. So I scoped him up in a cup and brought him inside.
I already had a tank set up and running but did not have anything in it. SO in he went. I was on pins and needles all day yesterday. Because he sat so still and barely moved. I didn't think the little guy would make it. But lo and behold today he was an active little guy. We bought him some minnows yesterday and some worms and a few of each was in his tank. And today we saw him stalking them. We also saw him digging in the gravel and everything. So I think the little guy will make it.
His name is Spike and here are some pics. Sorry if they are a little fuzzy.
Actually they can live in any standing body of water. Lakes, rivers, streams, ditches. We do have a good size ditch out front. Which is where I think he came from. But we have not had any rain in a long time and this ditch is almost dried up. Which is why I think he was where he was.
But now he has a permante home. No need to worry about finding food or water cause his home dried up.
I didn't know crawfish can live in any standing water, we have diches by my house too but I've never seen one. We do have small fish, frogs/tadpoles, and leaches. We had a big bull frog come in our backyard before, we almost ran over it with the mower but we took it back to the diches. I named him Burt because when he'd croak he'd sound like he was saying "Buurt".
I once found a baby salamander in my washer. Unfortunately it was after I had run it. Poor little guy! I think he somehow got in with my brother's clothes and I shoved him and the clothes into the washer in a heap. My brother is a truck driver and he had been to Texas so I guess that's where he picked him up somehow. I felt really bad!
