Ok, against some of y'all's advice (sorry about that) we went ahead and got a chihuahua for my daughter. Her date of birth 030804. She is absolutely beautiful fawn and white 2lbs. She gets along fine with out other dogs. No problems at all, thank God. My problem is this, she came with her first shots, worming, etc. and had an appointment at the vet Saturday for her second set of shots. Well, the vet got called out on a family emergency and we were rescheduled for this coming Friday. I spoke to the vet tech yesterday and told her the only concern I had in putting off the visit for a week was that the puppy (Ariel) has a lot of fleas. Our other dogs are on Sentinal and we haven't had any fleas in years. I went ahead and took her in and they gave her a pill, I hadn't heard of it before, but was to kill the fleas right away and gave us a tube of Frontline plus for each dog for the long run. The fleas are gone and everything is fine, except Ariel started coughing last night and I don't know why. I know this is one of the symptoms of heartworms, but is she too young for that? She is an inside dog and will be put on heartworm meds as soon as we go to the vet. Is there something I should do or just wait or call the vet on Monday???? I'm worried and would appreciate any advice. Y'all have been so helpful. Thank you.
Heartworm medications are very very weight intensive. If your puppy wiighs less than 1 or 2 lbs, or is less than 7 or 8 weeks old (and if I did my math right, its about 6 weeks, which is too young IMHO for a chihuahua to be seperated from it's mother), you wont be able to put it on a heartworm preventative of any sort. I doubt it's heartworms as only a total idiot is going to be raising chihuahuas outdoors where mosquitoes can get at it. However if she had bad fleas, she could have hookworms, roundworms, or whipworms. Dogs can get worms by ingesting the fleas. Take a stool sample to the vet and have them examine it for worms.
Tomorrow she will be 10 weeks old, we got her last Saturday. I haven't seen any worms in her stool, but I will do that anyway. I was worried because this just started after getting the medicine for fleas. You don't think that could have anything to do with it?
Oh yeah i was thinking April 8, not march haha. Yes that's 10 weeks of age. It might be related to the pill (probably capstar). All you can do is keep an eye on her and watch for any other reactions, skin problems, twitching, bad scratching, etc.
You're right, it was capstar, I just couldn't remember the name to save my life. So far, no other symptoms. I will call the vet tomorrow. Thank you, I was probably over reacting, but she has already become one of the family. Even my husband ( who isn't a big dog lover) just loves her to death. My whole family is amazed. Thanks for the advice.
