Well as you all know I carefully researched toy poodles and thier nutritional needs and went out a bought an all natural pet food esp. made for toy breeds. Well Nap hated eating it so I forbide anyone to feed him except me. I wanted to force a diet change. At his previous home they fed him kibble and bits and table food. So I was trying to inprove his nutrition.I even bought some canned food esp for toy breeds to mix with his kibble (which he didnt like)
Well i noticed hes looking good but not eating much. Just picking here and there and I said that must be some good stuff because hes still keeping weight on and full of himself eh? Well hubbie laughed and said when Nap rides on the golf cart to go feed the hound dogs , hes been feeding him Hi-Tek along with his. UUUGGHHHH! And I'm trying to raise 3 children with this man! Well I just threw my hands up and said I guess we wont waste no more $$ on that expensive food and feed him what you feed your hounds. Of course he wont feed his hounds crap but still I was trying to be proper here.
Hes talking about getting the mini schnauzer he always wanted now. I still say NO WAY Napoleon is enough for now. But hes like well they hardley eat anything and they're so small. We're used to having bigger dogs that eat like a horse. So I guess I better be glad hes loving my poo as much as me.
But as far as the food thing..I gave it a shot and now I'm just going to feed him what we feed everyone else. I mean if it can keep a Coonhound in top condition during hunting season , I'm sure it's good enough for Nap. And hes does like it. I'm going to mix whats left of his other food with it untill its all gone. i hate to think I wasted that time and $$ in the 1st place though.

Ive also tried a few exspensive brands of puppy food for my bichi-poo and he hates them and wont eat them. I did the mixing with his regular iams puppy food. But still wouldnt touch it. So i have all these bags off food i bought and he wouldnt eat. The last time i was at petsmart tho, i was checking on a differnt brand of food and i wasnt sure what and if i wanted to try something diffenrt again knowing bentley wont eat new food, the petsmart worker told me that they take back open bags of food if your pet dont like them. With a reciept you can get your money back with out a receipt they will exchange for store credit. Now i think thats a good deal. Im going to load all the bags i have and get some iams..LOL
I'm glad you all can relate! I just look at his yummy looking expensive food with those carrots and healthy nuggets and wonder why he wants to eat Hi-Tek???I'm not going to fight it any longer. I feel like he loves hubbie now , more than me! He sees me coming and says Oh thats the lady that makes me eat card board , sits me outside to poop it all out and watches me like a mother hen! See's Hubbie and says Theres the dude that gives me rides on the golf cart, treats me like a REAL DOG and lets me eat like one! How can I compete?(LOL!) I have a full blown hunting dog trapped in a toy poodle!Ha!
We researched both toy poodles and Miniature Schnauzers because we didnt want a dog that shed hair everywhere ( 1 cat was enough!) and since Nap has turned out to be such a great addition to the family hes thinking we minds well get the schnauzer too. Hes down sized his hunting dogs due to medical issues and I think having Nap has helped out with filing the void.
NO, NO , NO I'm not going to talk myself into another dog just yet!LOL!
duchess, I can absolutely relate here. I have our girls on a very strict feeding, water, sleeping schedule. Granted it's more for my sanity than their well being. They'd be fine eating whatever, whenever, and going to bed when they feel like it.
But so I don't go nuts I calculate and measure. Now all our issues are resolved, so I thought! My mother in law come's over, feeds them people food, which is a BIG no no, and puts them to bed in their crates WITH their harnesses on...etc. Needless to say, they get the runs, chew apart their over priced harnesses and stop listening to my commands. I know exactly hwo it feels to dedicate to a cause, only to have it all fall because of outside influence. I just count to te, laught a little and clean up the mess. Nap will be okay on whatever food! And he does appreciate the time and effort you put into his wellbeing! :]
lol..yep...more like the roo roo at dutches house..
Dutch...they are wonderful lil dogs..fiesty..and can be yappy and if not socialised well can be snappy..just get a spay bottle and teach them just like any other dog..my lil male..hes 24 pounds of raw steel..he goes after the shepherds and doesnt think hes alil guy..he struts like hes a mastif...so..i too like the non shed..shepherds shed so darn much..and it just skates across the floor...in a day...so..dont feel bad for wanting another pet...but..guarenteed..a schnauser will give that peking duck a run for its money...lol take care
We fostered two schnauzers puppies. They were fiesty lil things but they loved everyone. The male went into the vet office at 8 weeks old and when this shepherd walked in he tried to attack it! Teh shepherd weighed about 100 lbs too.He never backed down from any dog. When he was 12 weeks we were in the car and had the window down.We stopped at a light on the highway and the lil rascal jumped right out of the window! He got scared realizing that it wasnt a safe place and jumped in when we opened the door.
I am turning a deaf ear to any Miniature Schnauzer comments!LOL! I dont know if i can handle the terrier personality. Sounds lame coming from a pit owner but I hear all those fiesty stories and as long as i can hold hibbie back then I'm plugging my ears!Ha!
Huron did you see Duke and the duck pics I posted? Some breeds are hard to train to be livestock friendly so I'm weary of a terrier breed.

Well sorry, here's another schnauzer lover. ha!! I know what you mean about the hubby. I have problems too. Schnauzers are prone to diabetes. Our male has had it for 2yrs. now. When you have a husband like ours you have to really watch. Mine feeds them snacks in the morning when he gets up. Of course they can't wait for daddy to get up. I have talked, talked and talked until I'm blue in the face. After Max has thrown up a couple of times I think hubby is finally getting the picture. As far as being terrier, I will have to say ours have been great. They are barkers, but, we can leave them in the house and know that they will not bother anything. I have never had anything major tore up. I have had Tina get mad and tear up kleenix.. But, that is about it. Mandy has never tore up anything and I can't remember Max doing either. They are great little dogs.
Duchess, Hi-Tek is actually pretty good food. We feed our Toy Poodles Natural Balance and have had great success with it. All 10 eat it without to much fuss. We also mix things in with it (raw hamburger, eggs, liver, heart, etc.) each meal. As for your hubby's need for a hunting dog, have you ever considered a Standard Poodle. They are excellent water retriever/gun dogs (originally bred for) and could probably pick up on hunting also. He could have his hunting companion and you could have another Poodle. If you've never had the personal experience of being around a Standard Poodle, you might be amazed. By the way, they are not like the smaller poodles, are not sissys, and don't have to have big hair.
OH No> no more hunting dogs for hubbie! He's retireing from the coon hunting thing and only has 2 left ,one for my son to use in competition and 1 for his own pleasure hunting. And his only passion in hunting is listening to the dogs tree. Like hounds for coon hunting or treeing fiests for squirrel. But after seeing all those majestic standard poodles I reallly see them in a new way. I dont know if I could handle the grooming responsibilites in such a large dog though. Hi-tek is really been good for the hounds and I was just trying to be proper and keep up with the Jones' and buy Nap speciality food but i guess he likes being one of the guys so we'll just feed him what he likes. I got better things to stress over.
