My 4 year old maltese, Chandler, had knee surgery 3 weeks ago. Up until that time we used to walk twice a day in our neighborhood. He would do his "business" and we'd come home. Nightime I took him in the yard and he would just squat and "wee" before bed.
Due to the surgery, we can't be walking the neighborhood so we are restricted to the yard. He absolutely refuses to go in the yard unless he is absolutely desperate. As of right now, 3:45PM, he has not gone to the bathroom since 11PM last night. He is eating and drinking normally, so I know he has to go! I spent 1/2 hour in the yard this morning and nothing - he just keeps looking down the road like PLEASE take me.
I have brought sticks and leaves into the yard (his fav's on walks) - to no avail! When he does relieve himself I make a big deal almost like I'm beginning potty training again - treats and all!
Does anyone have any ideas? And does anyone know if it is bad for him to be holding his urine this long? 3 weeks is a long time, I thought he would have caught on by now!
It's not going to hurt him to hold it for awhile. He will go eventually. take him out to the yard give him 5 minutes. if nothing go back in the house. try again later. if he goes in the house. you are going to have use a crate. the dog is not being disobedient or "being stubborn" he just does not associate the yard with potty as much as he does his walks it's just not normal for him to go in the yard during the day. he will be fine and eventually he will go. just be patient. this is not a big deal.
Would it hurt for him to walk slowly down the sidewalk maybe for just a little piece and then back, or do they not want him walking at all like that? Poor little baby, I guess he can't hold it forever, evidually he will have to go.HA!! Lets hope its not in the house.
Well Gunny you did make me feel a little better. I just feel so bad for him - he has no idea why he can't go for his walks. Maybe it's my feelings, not his, that are getting in the way! I'm sure he won't let his bladder explode - OMG, with my luck, I shouldn't have said that! LOL
I have tried taking him down the side of the road with his belly strap but the minute he gets out there he wants to take off like a rocket! That he definitely cannot do!
Only 5 weeks and 2 days until he can be a normal dog again, but hey who is counting!
