No, it is NOT perfectly normal-it's a congenital abnormality.

And it certainly doesn't increase the number of people who want them. If it does, please explain that to all the polydactal cats still waiting for homes at the shelter where I used to work.
The average dog is a nicer person than the average person.

Polydactyly..I hope I spelled it right. I LOVE poly kittens!!! It is not a handicap. I wish I could have a hairy cat. My hubby is very allergic. You are blessed to have 6toed babies!! Advertise as Polydactyly. You might want to check the spelling.

Hey, I found this link when I was looking up 6-toed cats. I've had cats all my life and never once before did we EVER have a cat with 6 toes... until today. My cat gave birth to three, two of which are poly in the front, and the other is normal on her front paws, but is poly on ONE of her paws in the back. Very strange so I panicked and googled it of course haha. Glad to see I'm not the only one.. they're adorable kitten, but they've got those enormous paws =]

Polydactyl is a recessive trait, meaning the kittens must get the recessive gene from both mommy and daddy. It is relatively rare, but common in existing colonies (feral) where a lot of inbreeding occurs. I've never heard of any other congenital defects that adversly affect kitties tied to this one, but since it is a common occurance in inbred cats there is an increased likelyhood of other congenital defects from recessive genes being present. Some people really like 6 toed cats. But sadly they often go unadopted because of their abnormality. What is "special" to one person is a "defect" to others.
I like most cats better than I like most people.

The thread that will not die. As long as someone bumped this up, let me add a few facts...

According to Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts (yes, I read this stuff!!!) the polydactyl gene can cause a wide range of defects, including missing or abnormal bones. This is actually rare, though. Most cats just end up with extra toes.

Genetically speaking, polydactylism is a dominant trait. A cat needs only one copy of this gene from either parent to have the trait. If one parent has this gene, between 40-50% of kittens will inherit the gene.

However, many polydactyl cats also carry the gene for normal toes, so even breeding 2 polydactyl cats doesn't guarantee all kittens will be polydactyl.

And anybody who wants one-please check at your local shelter.

One of my cats is polydactyl - it's very cute, but SHOULD NOT be a selling point or a reason to breed your cat.

FROM EXPERIENCE, having a cat with extra toes can lead to HUGE issues with the extra claws growing in thicker and faster then the rest of the claws. If close attention is not paid to these "super claws" (Google it, that's what they are sometimes called), the claw can grow right around and into the pad of the cat's foot - OUCH!! - then needing VERY expensive vetrinary surgery!! Luckily, I haven't had to pay for surgery.
The only way to stop this from happening is to clip the extra claws WEEKLY (I'm against declawing, so this is not an option for me - also, my vet has stated on several occasions that a lot of polydactyls end up needing the extra toes amputated in order to successfully declaw them - leaving them without the extra toes anyway!).

I'd like to echo Catlover - if you want one of these cats, PLEASE search your local shelter - they're NOT uncommon and easily found!
