The original person posted because she thought her i year old dog might be pregnant, she didn't think she was old enough yet though??
If you think you have at least one more year after 2 heat seasons then you clearly have never read much about dogs before, a bitch can be bred on her first heat, and a dog can breed when his testies drop, generally around 6 months. If you don't know the basics then get your dog spayed or neutered, leave the breeding to people who are willing and able to help better their breeds. It is people who don't care enough to learn that are filling up rescues and shelters with unwanted dogs.
A few do not's of dogs:
DO NOT get your dog from a pet shop DO NOT get a certain breed because a friend had(has) one and it was(is) a great dog DO NOT breed your bitch becasue she will be a better dog after a litter DO NOT breed your dog because you just have to have a pup from him DO NOT breed any animal just to make a quick buck
Just becuse you think you own the best one of your breed, does not make it true, face it we all think that, just some of us know better. So we show and do health and temperment testing on our dogs so we really do KNOW that our dogs have something to add to the gene pools of our respective breeds.
I don't mean to hurt anyones feelings, but these are living breathing feeling beings we are dealing with, as are what we make them produce, many people do no share this feeling and do terrible things to dogs, many of the dogs they get their hands on come from free to good homes situations.
One last thing if your bitch is in heat do not leave them outside for even 1 minute, it only takes as little as 30 seconds.
If she just thought her dog was pregnant but was asking if she was too young to be I think your anaswer was a bit harsh. Maybe start another topic so she could read and understand pet responsibility but her question was simple. You could have said, Yes your 1 year old is old enough to get pregnant, hence you should take it to the vet to get spayed immediately.
No she knew her dog had gone through 2 heat seasons already, and knew that she was in heat agin, but she left er dog in the yard anyway because she didn't think that she was old enough to get pregnant yet. to me it just seems that if you are going to get a pet you sould at least read a book about the basics of the animal before you decide not to spay her.
no i don't think you were too harsh. sounds like she may also be one of those people who think women can't get pregnant the fist time they have sex either. now that you have given her the do's and do nots you may want to try and help her be responsible for the pups and in finding them decent permanent homes.
"don't mean to hurt anyones feelings, but these are living breathing feeling beings we are dealing with," this is a line from your post regarding the dogs but so are the people you are responding to and I think the over all tone of your post was not very nice but you were correct in saying people should be informed before owning a pet but in the real world it doesn't always happen that way and what is the point in making people feel bad, the damage is already done and making them feel like crap isn't going to change anything. Hopefully this person has learned from her mistakes and this never happens again. You had some good things in your post, just need to be a little more tackful :)
