i have a german shepard puppy that i got when she was 10 hours old,,,yes 10 hours not 10 days,,,she is 10 days old today,,,i got her from a couple that breeds gsd and then sells them,,but my little puppy has a birth defect on her forehead,,so therefore she couldnt make them money and they were going to drown her...and i couldnt let that happen,i guess we arent supposed to comment on these back yard breeders so i will stay nice. when she was 2 days old i took her to the vet and she weighed .08 ou..i took her to the vet 7 days later and she lost 2 ou. so now i am worried,,,is this normal for newborn puppies??also does anyone know where i can look up info with pictures about birth defects so i can compare???any info i can get to help me save her would be awesome...
yes,,,she has a birth defect on her forehead,,it looks like a turmor and the vet said she will go through surgery in 5 weeks to have it removed. she has no momma dog to feed so we do it by a syringe, we just got to feeding her 5 full syringes,,so thats great compared to her just eating a 1/2 tsp. when we first got her..she is a strong puppy, holds her head up,crawls on the floor,,she is a sweet puppy,,there is no cause for her to be put to sleep,,nor do we want too
Sound like you have a big heart,,that's wonderful and lucky for her!!! We bred our Rottie, as the pups got older she has less to do with them (she was a bad mommy,,LOL), anyways, what I suggest you do is go to Wal-Mart and pick up a puppy bottle and some formula, the powder is cheaper and lasts longer, mix with warm water and shake well, then let her "nurse" like she would on her mother. Good luck!! Again, you're a Great person, keep up the good work. and whatever happens, remember that you tried everything you could!!
If she has not grown in 10 days and in fact has lost weight, chances of her surviving into adolesence are rather slim. Puppies grow and tehy grow fast, tehy are twice their origonal birth size in days normally. Weight is very important a 6oz dog is not going to be able to stand the rigors of anything.
While you are well meaning, chances are great that you have a host of other internal problems going on with this puppy. Heart and liver valves that have not closed and a poor digestive tract to start with.
i took the puppy to the vet and they put her on a feeding tube,so now i know she is eating and how much.it was very scarey at first because i could put the formula into her lungs and she would die,,but my vet taught me and i have done it 3 times now and so far so good. thanks for all your advice and concern will keep you all posted...
ok everyone,,i have been tube feeding my puppy for 2 days now,,she weighed 8 ounces when she was 2 days old,,then she went down to 6 ounces when she was 9 days old,at 11 days she was still 6 ounces,,she is now 13days old and is back up to 8 ounces,,i was so happy when the vet told me she gained,,they want her to come in mon, wed, and fri for a weight check,,just to monitor her...the tube feeding was so scarey at first then i got my husband to help me by holding the tube after i insert it,,and she accepts now with no problems,,,i prayed and prayed and my prayers were answered.
Thats great lets just hope she keeps going strong. so does this little girl have a name yet. I did this for a puppy that was a couple hours old, the mother would not feed her. I went to Petco and got the milk for her. I also had her on a heatpad and got a soft fluffy toy for her to lay with. She did great and when she was health and 12 weeks old i got her fixed and found a great home for her.
