A few days ago I changed over to Wysong dog food. Everything was ok I thought and then Max threw up. He has had diarrhea and will not eat nothing. The vet said this afternoon to keep giving him Pepto Bismol, no food whatsoever, only water. If he is not better tomorrow they want to check him out for pancreatis. I hope he doesn't have to go in and stay and that it is just a case of diarrhea and the food not agreeing with him. I am just going to stay with what I had them on. Wish I had left things alone. Mandy and Tina did okay on it. Poor little thing is just laying on the couch. When he doesn't get up when my husband comes home he is sick, and he just layed. He can't take his insulin too and that worries me. Hope I haven't nearly killed my baby.
Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. Poor baby. Don't blame yourself, you didn't know that the food wouldn't agree with him. I don't know anything about dog food, but I've had this same problem with some of my goats when I tried to change foods. Remove his feeding dish, give water sparingly, offer ice, give your pet some pepto, try pepcid AC, kapectate works too, treat for any hair coming up (like hairballs) if necessary. This is what I did when my babies got sick. I'm sure it's not too much different for a dog. Also, WATCH FOR BLOAT! Hope everything turns out ok. -Naolin
Well Max eat this morning. I gave him alittle bit of chicken, just enough to give him his shot. I am going to start feeding him 5or 6 small meals a day instead of the 2. I think it will be easier on him and thats what humans with diabetes do. I am so glad he is not going to have a hospital stay with pancreatis or anything. I have changed dog foods my last time. When its not broke don't try to fix it. My husband stopped on the way home last night and got him some Pedylite. (Sp) He would not drink it but I am going to try again in just alittle while. Has anyone else ever used this when your dogs were sick?
i free feed my dogs. they dont pig it all down at once. they eat only when they are hungry. i had tried several different foods before settling on one. rocky was having problems with one of the brands. he was throwing up and had real runny poop. they are fine with the NB that i feed them now. may be its just a food issue. hope your baby gets well soon.
One of our schnauzers had symptoms like this and it turns out she had gastroenteritis. She was more severe than Max though, she had a lot of bloody diarrhea that got worse before it got better. Don't feed him any people food and stick to the same diet with him. With meds and a strict diet, our Lacey has been fine. If you want to ask me any questions, feel free to post. Good luck!
Instead of the Pediolyte, which my dogs also HATE, I've used regular chicken/beef broth.
I believe it's Swanson brand that has the "no sodium" varieties. Otherwise it is way too salty.
I've even frozen small cubes of it to entice any kind of liquid consumption.
I think feeding the small portions more frequently is the best. I go to the local chinese take-out place and have them make plain white meat chicken (boiled) with white rice. Their rice has a higher starch content and it's amazing how well it works on the diarrhea.
