Hello! My family and I are looking into buying a pup and having it shipped to us. I was wondering what you guys think is the BEST airlines to ship a puppy on and WHY (if you have ever shppied a puppy, or gotten one shipped to you!) And what you would reccomend we do. And also, what would we need to bring when we go and pick the pup up from the airport?
HEre's my take on sellers who ship puppies. Do not make the purchase unless the breeder comes highly recommended. I mean, seriously> Personal references that you can get in touch with, or someone who's like member of at the very least a local breed club related to that breed, a local all breed club like the MOntgomery Kennel club, or a national breed club for whatever the breed is you are buying from.
If the breeder isn't involved with any of the local dog clubs or breed clubs, I'd say you'er buying at your own risk.
I have only ever shipped with Northwest or Continental. I have never ever had a problem. Continental is better in the summer months because they have a temperature controlled cabin for the puppies so they can ship in even very hot weather. The only downfall is they only ship from very very large airports. Good luck!
When I take the 2 hour drive to go pick a puppy up from the airport I bring a little bit of dry dogfood, bottle of water, a bowl, a towel, a roll of paper towels, trash bag, a toy, collar and leash depending on age.
I personally think if you want a puppy (or kitten, or bird, or any other pet), I think that's o.k. If You Live On A DESERTED ISLAND!!
Aren't there puppies available close to where you live? Seriously, I transported my cat in a plane when I moved from Iowa to Arizona, and that poor cat was so traumatized!
I know for a fact that there are puppies available for sale, or adoption almost anywhere in the Country. I just don't understand buying and shipping of pets. They're not a piece of mail or a commodity that can be shipped.
There may be pets out of any paper, or even reputable breeders in your area, but if you are looking for a specific puppy from a specific bloodline with a specific look, you can not find it in your area.
Cats are different from dogs too. I haven't had many shipped to me, only from California. Otherwise I drive. I have driven all over the country to pick up puppies I purchased. Unforunately a lot of people have to work, or are scared to drive that far or what ever, and can't make the trip in person.
I don't know of any puppies that were 'traumatized', maybe a bit scared, or a bit tired, but they are always happy to see thier new family and were fine and playing immediately if not the next day.
