I doubt this law would go through, westminster, and other dog shows bring in a fair amount or revenue for NY, I can't see them cutting that off. If this law does get passed, which I doubt, either they would amend it to allow people to show in NY or have a fair few dog clubs closs, I doubt it. I think that as long as you can prove you got your dock/crop done out of state then you would be okay.
I do have a question, these laws have been passed in germany right? What happens when you import a dog from there? Can it be showen in can/us? Or do you wait and show its offspring?
I do know thaqt I was looking a boxer breed's page in Briish Columbia and she stated that she is having a hard time finding a vet to crop as well. SHe has one to dock, but they all refuse to crop ears.
WOW, dont know if I want to post to this one or not....LOL. As a breeder of miniature schnauzers I do not have any problem getting tails and dews done. I have asked my vet if using a numbing agent would be better for them, so he gives a tiny little bit for the tails, the dews are no big deal. I have never had my dogs ears done for 2 reasons, one my vet had told me the care afterwards is quite painful and I hate the way it looks on a schnauzer, they look mean IMO.
Now as a dog groomer I can honestly say that any dogs I have done with their ears cropped do have some sensitivity to me messing with their ears. My vet says it causes an association with people and pain in young pups and that takes awhile to get over.....IHO. I really don't care crop or dont crop, however I would think there would be some pain management for the pups if a crop is done....in this day and age I feel very strongly that no human or animal should have to experience pain for any reason....not with all the information and technology we have.
I also do not think the government should get involved in this issue....they have bigger fish to fry, like the situation in Iraq, illegal immigrants and our country headed down the road to self-destruction.
I can say this, the one miniature schnauzer that was owned by a family member had her ears done, and she got ear infection, my dogs have never had it......because IMO...I keep the hair out and clean them on a regular basis.
I guess it's all about choice. Weather you are for or against it. Don't like docking/cropping? Don't do it to your dogs, just don't tell me I can't do it to mine. What business is it of any one other than that dog/pups owner? Really this country is becoming less and less the 'land of the free'.
Rednose...if we were to leave the dogs as God intended then there would be no "purebreeds" since all a purebreed is a whole bunch of other dogs mated together over time to get a specific color and style and so forth. Like the Dobe was made by mixing the Rott and several other dogs together.
My point...we've have our hand in the outcome of dogs for ages....how is this any different? Do you own a purebreed?....Then you have bought into the "changing of dogs" and gone against your own philosophy.
The gov't has NO right telling me what I can and cannot do with my dog [medically]. This is supposed to be a free country. I tell ya, if they keep making these laws about MY pets, I'm going to start claiming them as dependants.
My dobe loves to ahve his ears rubbed. i have heard those inproperly cared for or those that get infected may get head shy but my boy was back to wanting his ears rubbed a day after his surgery:) I've never met a dobe that didn't love an ear rub!
I only have 2 APBT. I will keep these 2 dogs and any other ones in the future natural ,the way god intended for my dogs to be. I see no reason to inflict unecassary pain on a animal for cosmetic purposes.Your chopping off tails and cutting ears for a look. How cruel is that. It's wrong and should be made illegal.I've always felt very strongly about this . I wish more people would to .
Lastly all you people who choose to cut your dog for a look , you don't know what your missing when those ears and face have the most perfect expressions , and when the dogs thump their tails out of happiness.I would never take that away from my dogs. I wouldn't use a breeder who believed in those practices.

I do not know of any reputable AMERICAN boxer breeders that would not dock tails and dew claws. Show or otherwise. It is just standard, and the decision has to be made before age 3 days. I have had 2 requests over the years and I told both that they would need to pick out their puppy at 2 days and I would need payment in full before not docking tails/dews. Why? Because if they 'changed their mind' it would be very difficult to place a boxer with a tail.
Natural ears are different, but a boxer with a tail (I have only seen 1 in person), does not look purebred.
Except for a medical emergency, leave them alone. I HAVE seen 'happy tail' effects and saw a dog that had to get its tail amputated due to it. Now, if 80% of dogs(ALL dogs) were getting 'happy tail' then I would be for docking. However, they don't. Seems to me, that there is a 'FLAW' in these breeds, and therefore the solution is to cut it off. Why not try to breed for no tails? Or even a workable tail? Ears. Well that is just a stupid thing. Sorry to offend but this is my OPINION. With the EXCEPTION of severe medical reasons, there is NO logical reason to crop a dogs ears. If the dog is not suitable to do its job without being cut up first, then there is a FLAW in the breed. It should be addressed, not cut up. Why not work for proper ears? Other breeds have been able to succesfully get their breed standards to where no further manipulation was needed for them to their job. I am undecided on Dewclaws, although I believe anesthesia is a MUST with ANY surgery AT ALL!
If people are allowed to show their dogs with fairly obvious flaws(and by that I mean, you had to 'fix' them to make them fit to standard) then I should be able to show my cream chow with a light colored nose....as 90% of cream chows nose turn, they do not stay black. There are NO KNOWN lines that have consistant black noses that stay. So, I should be able to paint his nose. Why not? I would be just making him LOOK like what the judges want him to look like.
Well....I guess in about a week a few of you will be very mad at me because my puppy is getting it's ears clipped the day after we get back from picking him up.
I want my Dobe to do it's job and have the appearance that the "standard" Dobe has...which means a docked tail and cropped ears. I want anyone that isn't family to fear him and head warning from the door. He's going to be a working dog and a pet. But I want him to do his job if even from a distance....
Like I said, don't like it don't get it done to your dog. Just don't tell me I can't do it to mine because I don't agree with your feeling on the issue.
Red- I imagine that you don't like other legislation concerning dogs, like say BSL dictating things about peoples pets.
No one is MAKING pet owners get ears/tails done if they don't want to. If some one can find a vet to do the proceedure it is their business not the governments.
This is a slipery slope. What if people felt the same about spaying/neutering? That is also removing some pretty important parts and is JUST as risky as ear cropping and much more risky than removing tails dew claws.
but rednosed-altering does cause pets to die. No dog dies from cropping(except anesthesia reaction).
I have kept many unaltered dogs and had no accidnets so whos to say it shouldn't be a person responcibility to keep their dogs from breeding. then there dog won't have to suffer a horrible LIFE threatening surgery for their owners convience(which it is).
It can also be argued altering is not healthy for a dog. So how can you say its a helath thing but my dog getting his ears cropped was not?
I would never tell a person not to alter their dog though. its there business.
It cna be your opinion it shouldn't be done, yet I tell you it was a helth issue for my dog and once again you say its cosmetic......health issue=not cosmetic

Red- My vet who is the best boxer ear cropper in my state, says that it decreases ear infections and that a working dog can rip their ears easier if they are not cropped. Which can be more painful. (I don't know if I agree or not with that- I am still undecided how I feel about ear cropping)
Tails can be broken or stepped on by livestock on working dogs, which can also be painful.
Many ordinary dogs have dew claw injuiries if they are just running through a field and it gets caught it can just be ripped right off, and that is painful.
Weather you agree on the reasoning, these things were/are medical proceedures.
Joce ,if your cropping for health isuues ,that's one thing. If some one is doing it for a standard because this is the way the breed standard says it's suppose to be,it's time to become more humane and change it.It'll take time, but mayb some day it will be so.JMO.
But you never know if that problem will come up in the future when you can no longer crop. byron actually wasn't going to be cropped and thank god his ears didn't wait to act up. I'll always crop after the experience with him. It may not be a big chance that they'll have issues but any chance for me and I'll get it done since its not that big of an issue with me. I have the time to care for the ears and I've never seen these pained ruined dogs I hear about after cropping.
the standard is there for a reason and working dogs like the dobe are that way for a reason. I consider all my dogs working dogs and while my beagle has hung her ears up on things none of my erect ear dogs have.
