Huck is almost 9 weeks old, a real sweetheart. He's going to be quite the lap dog.
Does anyone have any experience with basset hound puppies? Any tips or tricks that are specific for hound dogs? He's been sleeping in a crate next to the bed since we got him, whining to go out in the early morning hours and going right back to sleep afterwards. Last night he slept right through until around seven this morning. He's been really good about going outside, and we're keeping him on a routine for going potty.
The cat (Linus) and him have been developing a relationship. Linus has always liked to horse around, so having Huck here has been a good excuse for him to play. They have been playing "chase" since day one - I know it's for fun because when Linus has had enough, he jumps out of Huck's reach. It doesn't happen very often. :)
I know of one tip that I learned from someone on the forum. She has one and as a puppy, his ears would hang into the water bowl, and from being wet periodically all day long, he would have ear problems. Sooo she used a big sock to loosely tie them onto the top of his head. There was even a picture, I'll try to find it.
Welcome to TP! He is super cute! I have a special place in my heart for bassets. I know they make a special kind of bowl for dogs with long ears, so that they don't stay wet all day, my grandparents had a basset when I was growing up & I remember he had a special bowl...here is an example of one:
Thanks! He totally won us over with those big sad eyes of his.
I like the suggestions for keeping his ears out of the water bowl, it will come in handy. Right now, he's got more problems keeping his back feet out of there when he attacks his food bowl! Last night the husband was convinced he had piddled on the floor, but he'd just been walking around after soaking his feet for a little while.
Gosh he is the cutest thing ive seen in along time.. i forgot how cute basset hounds are, My friend had one growing up his name was Gordy i still remember him, he died of old age years ago when i still lived at home but he was the most lovable dog, Oh and his bark cracked me up...
He does have a pretty funny bark. When he wakes up in the middle of the night and has to go outside, he lets out this huge baying whine that sounds like he's being tortured. Drama! It sounds almost too sad to be funny - if I didn't know it was mostly for show, I would be heartbroken -but at least he's telling us, right? :)
Still, for a little guy, he can really belt it out!
i am no expert with basset hounds because toby is my first but i have found that constant reinforcmant works best for my little guy. i have heard alot of people say bassets are stupid but they actually are really smart. my husband and i taught him to sit and fetch in just a matter of a week. as long as you continue to work with your pup on a regular basis everything should go pretty well. good luck with your new addition.
Huckleberry and Toby are both very cute pups. I have never owned a basset but this last time when I was at the humane society I almost came home with one, but in the back of my mind I kept thinking there was a reason I shouldn't get one and then as I was walking over to his cage he left out this howl and I remembered the reason :) lol I think they are adorable dogs and if this guy hadn't let out that howl he probably would have been ours! Enjoy them and love them and take good care of them.
About the dishes, the stores have a lot of dishes that are up off the floor for the dogs to eat out of , some are real high and others are a little lower. I have heard of the same ear problems with cockers and the like, but their ears are so cute too! good luck to the both of you. :)
Since I didn't get the basset, I got a Bichon/Westie mix from an ad in our newspaper. Here is a picture of him.
So, I searched through all of my pictures and cannot find the one of my Borris with his homemade snood.
I actually got the idea from Icyhound. who uses them to keep her Afghan Hounds ears dry and clean for shows.
I got my Borris for christmas...what a handful...but soo worth it. Everytime he drank, and everytime he went outside to play in the snow his ears would get soaked! So as a puppy my husband made a snood out of an old tube sock. He just cut off the foot part and used the elastic part to go around his head. He grew out of them fast so then i made a few for him out of some matirial i had laying around the house. Here is a pic of my boy.
Thanks for all the compliments! I love the pictures of the other bassets, too. I'm at work right now (shh!) and missing the little guy terribly.
Looks like I'll be making Huck a snood one of these days. One question, though. How do you make sure they wear it whenever they drink? I can't picture him wearing it all day long, and yet I don't really forsee being able to follow him around every day and putting it on whenever he approaches the water dish. Do you just keep it near the dish and put it on when you notice them going for a drink?
Thanks again for all the great pictures and suggestions!
You know what is weirc??? I don't think I have ever seen a basset puppy. I mean, I just see them as adults and stuff, but when I looked at them during these cute puppy stages, i thought "I have never seen one as a pup before!" I guess just because as adults they look like old men!!! ha ha..
