Im thinking about getting a puppy i have wanted one for about a year. I have read a lot of info but wanted to hear from any owners on this site. I have a larger dog a rott who has been aroun dmy friens and he is great and VERY careful with them . If you have one please let me know what to expect, i am getting a little girl.
My mom had a mini for 17 years. She was a great dog. The only problem she had was periodic back pain. My mom was always careful not to encourage Trudy to sit up and do other things that would damage her back (she even had a ramp up onto the couch so she wouldn't have to jump) but it was still an occasional issue that required medication.
She was very dominant with other dogs, though. I don't know if that's common for the breed or if that was just her.
I had a mini back several years ago that lived to be 15yrs. He could sit up and was over weight so we were fortunate he never had any back problems. Very, very stubborn. They are darling little dogs but he was stubborn, dominate and the older he got he bit be several times. If you tried to make him do something he didn't want to do, he would bite.
This is my second time owning a dachshund. They are great dogs. Dachshunds do however have their OWN mind. He still has the hunting instinct (they are also called "badger" dogs) in him. We have a yard and when he sees rabbits or deer’s, he wants to get them.
My daughter has a pet rabbit named Whiskers. When Nicky would get the chance, he would like to get him too.
Anyway dachshunds are great. They are also very smart. I'm very happy with him. You also need to be careful to not overfeed them, they are prone for overweight.
I just recently purchased a mini female doxie. Let me tell you, this girl has a personality of her own. Very very very smart, too smart sometimes. She knows when she gets out of her kennel for playtime, when it's time to go to bed... and I go to pick her up, she runs from me. haha. The only thing i've noticed is they are very very stubborn. We are having some trouble with potty training, and eating things we're not supposed to.. but we're working on it. She has a great personality, really a lover. Kisses for everybody. hehe. You can see a pic of her on my other topic from today titled "Picturessss from today" I believe. :) Enjoy her. They're great.
I have 11 dachshunds. I must say they are definately my favorite breed, and husband's also. Very smart, funny, bonds very closely with their family. Very easy to take care of. They do have a mind of their own and won't let you forget it! Yes they are dominant dogs, the females more so than a neutered male. It doesn't matter what size the other dog is, the dachshund will plan on running the show. But like I said, I see this much more with females. They do not tend to like large dogs. We do have large dogs here also but they just ignore my doxies with a "yeah, whatever you say" type attitude. My brother also has a rottie and 2 dachshunds. Works out fine except the older doxie terrorizes the rottie. Socializing is very very important with a doxie as they do not usually care for strangers. If they are expected to be good with children, then they must be exposed to children in a pleasant manner while they are growing up. If one doesn't like strangers or children, it will not hesitate to bite them if they won't leave it alone. While I have read many times of people having problems house training doxies, I myself have never had a problem, even with adult rescues that have come in. But then again I am home all day to work with them. Yes they do have their health issues just like any other breed. I have only ever had 1 who ended up with a back problem. Good to ask if the mother and father have ever had any health issues AND have either of them ever produced a puppy before who ended up with any health problems. Dachshunds live to eat. You must control their weight. So many people have fat doxies. This is just asking for health problems! Dachshunds are a very rewarding breed to own!
Thanks for all the great info, this will be the first babies for this dog. The lady who had them is a vet so i would think she has done all the test, but i will still ask anyway.I can tell you both the parents have a great personality towards people as well as being around kids. This should help with the babies attitude correct.
