I've been thinking of starting my own pet sitting business. My dad is going to order me a certification home study for petting sitting through NAPPS if I want to do it. That way I learn everything I need to know and will be certified.
I was thinking I could also do some simple grooming... bath, nail trimming. Administer meds, dog walking, yard cleaning, transportation. Alot at once I know but just some ideas.
There are pet sitters around, but none really in the area that I am. I could serve 2 counties, unlike the ones I know that only serve 1.
Think its a good idea? I'm still trying to decide.
Go to www.petsit.com, they have liability and bonding insurance available if you are a member.
Also, www.pattimoran.com has tons of tools, from first aid kits to contracts and t-shirts.
I would recommend reading Pet Sitting for Profit, its by the lady who started Pet Sitting as a profession, and founded PSI, and Patti Moran's.
Your library should have books on different forms and policies. My county has libraries designated as business libraries, that have every book imaginable. Barnes and Noble also has many books available on starting a Pet Sitting or home-based pet care business. You'll need to do a business plan too, but the library should have plenty of books on that.
I've considered starting one, but in the area that I want to move to, there are already at least 13 pet sitting services.
I don't want to discourage you at all, but there is A LOT to think about (this is why a business plan is important). But, I think your biggest challenge would be your age. While I know I would trust you in my home, a lot of people may see you as "a teenager" and not trust you. Bonding insurance should help this though.
I've done a bit of research on this, so if you need anything, let me know. I'll try to help in any way I can.
Heather, thanks for the info. That is why I wanted to get my certification and I'll check out those links for the insurance. I plan to join a few of the pet sitting groups, if I do. I don't plan on starting anything right away, but in the near future.
I think that would be awesome!! I could use someone at my house every now and then when we go out of town. Seems like you have done some research,,but still need a little more info,,:] Insurance is a biggy, especially if you go to their homes. But hey what the heck,,,go for it, If you were in my area I'd have to check into it,,,
My sister used to work for a pet sitter. She would get a fee from the pet sitter and the pet sitter would charge more to the client so she made her cut.
She liked doing it but eventually stopped because everyone always wants you on the weekends that you want to do something or during the holidays. You also have to figure the price of gas into the equation. To get a consistent loyal client base, you will have to be available whenever they call. That would be the tough part. She did like the afternoon trips to feed and walk the dogs. She could plan them around her timing and when she was going that way. The cats were easier, of course, than the dogs.
Ashley..........I think it is a GREAT idea. You have done so much already with your life in benefiting dogs in need around you by Transporting them. I bet that's just half of what you do. You are the most caring person for any dog to know. I think if you could Extend your love and devotion to other dogs while their owners are away/need to be watched......That would be a wonderful thing. I would put Mia (my dog....my most important little boy in my life) in your hands any day. I would know he would be in good hands and that is a major plus for you. I think if you set your mind to this......You will do great things!
I wish you lived near me as I would hire you in a second..I until recently have always had a dog sitter but she was a college student and has just graduated..I'm just more comfortable having them in their own house than being boarded. Good luck as I'm sure you will do well
Thanks!!! In the future I want to do a boarding kennel, but thats quite expensive so that wont be for a long time lol.
And I'm in the perfect spot, there are tons of tourists coming up here now wanting to board their dogs while they check out the area. There is only decent boarding kennel and thats an hour from me. The rest, that I've checked out, haven't been so nice.
