my dog ate one of her pups today, thay are three days old. what could have cause her to eat it? the pup seem to be doing great yeasterday.thier was a pup dead and she didnt eat that one this was right after she had them. ive never seem a dog eat one of her puppies this long after she had them. thank you for any anwers.
It is extremely unusual for a dog to eat it's offspring unless there's some problem or the dog is extremely stressed out for one reason or another. It's more common in rodents like rabbits and the like. I'm not sure what to tell you, I'd keep an eye on the dog to be on the safe side
I have seen this before in terriers, if this litter is important to you muzzle mom. The third day is when you loose puppies that cannot nurse (it takes 3 days to starve).I know that is not something anyone wants to hear, but that is the rule of thumb that is used in hospitals with infants who are not viable. The problem here is if you have been weighing puppies you know if one of them was not thriving, if you were not you don't know. If you put a nylon muzzle on mom, tight enough that she cannot get puppy in her mouth, loose enough for her to drink and lick puppies, you don't have to worry. Of course you have to remove the muzzle several times a day while she cannot get to the puppies for her to eat etc. I have no idea what causes this, but my friend's scottie had 3 litters normally then earned herself the unfortunate nickname of Mamma Eats A Lot by eating her next litter and one of her last litter. She was in a room by herself when this happened. She was muzzled and raised the last of the litter, then was spayed.
They usually eat the puppies that aren't right. Something was wrong with that one, she knew to eat it. I have seen it happen before with other breeders I know, and in different breeds. I have known it to happen a few times with my aunte's standard poodles and my friend's great danes. Just watch the other pups to make sure they are healthy and to make sure nothing is wrong with the mother to think there is anything wrong with them.
