Wow those are beautiful dogs! Can you please tell me a little about the breed. My sister has a Standard Poodle and she really needs a friend for her but she wants something different. She loves the large regal looking dogs and I have forgotten about this breed. They are beautiful. Her Poodle is huge and much larger than most poodles get. She is almost 29 inches tall and 76#'s at 9 months old. She is so long legged but beautiful. She goes to doggy daycare 3x a week to help burn her energy but she needs a pal to go with her. She loves dogs that need grooming because she loves taking hers to the groomer. So would this be a breed she should look into in your opinion?
Afghans are milder in temperment then poodles. They really are not a breed that needs doggie daycare. The couch is a much better daycare in their opinion.
Outside they do play, wrestle and in general act like normal dogs. They are very dog social and pack oriented. Also they can wear most dogs out by the other dog just trying to keep up. Afghans absoutly adore being chased.
That is quite the large poodle. Afghan bitches are normally aroudn 24-26 inches and 40-50lb while males are 26-26 and 50-60 pounds. They look larger then they are, but they are far from fragile dogs.
I enjoy the breed, they are absoutly fantastic and yes they must be groomed. They are not as much work as a poodle fortunatly.
Ahhh man just when I think I have made up my mind about my next dog, I have to see beutaflu pics of my other top pic, dang namitt. I am either going to get an afghan hound or a bouvier des flanders. Now I am totally torn again!!!
Hey Icy how are afghans at obediance? From what I have found they are like shibas, almost hopelless when it comes to listening, what they want is more important.
They *can* do it if you are willing to work with them. They are not good at drilling. They learn the commands quite well, but you are normally limited to a sesson every other day. No hours and hours of it, no over and over on a command.
Some are more pleasers then others. I raise mine around a working do and they pick up some habits that help them with more formal training. One of my males is freakishly non afghan like in personality and I'm hoping to get some agility or obediance propects from his progeny becuase he is truely a pleasre and like most afghans hes fantastic at figuring almost everything out on his own.
But if you are looking for a dog to just DO obediance, no they are not into it. Also they tend not to need that heavy formality of training. Its amazing how easy they are to live with if you are strong willed enough to make them listen and understanding enough to realize you onyl need to show them a few times to get it into their slender skulls.
