Hi all..... I woke up this morning and Mia (my dog - one year old Yorkie mix, 10 lbs) and I went for a walk. Then when I came back in, he vomited Yellow vomit. I am pretty sure that yellow vomit is 'Bile' vomit.
What caused this though?? He hadn't eaten his breakfast when he vomited. He just ate now and is acting fine. Was it that is stomach was empty? But this has never happened before. I could see a few bits of a rawhide he ate earlier this morning he just nibbled on it for a few minutes will I was getting ready to go for his walk. He has eaten it before though and was fine. Would it make sense that he ate that on an EMPTY stomach so that is the problem??
When they vomit bile and slimy slobber its because there stomach is completely empty and kinda upset. Usually getting them to eat a good meal will take care of it. Be on the lookout though for more vomiting. If he cant hold his food down go to the vet.
Yorkiemalt is very correct. Pepcid has been known to work great for dogs that vomit little amounts of food and for bile barfers. All the yellow stuff is, is the acid in his stomach and usually when they start to throw that up its because they are on empty and need a refill. That alone will cause an upset stomach. The pepcid will rid some of the acid so they are less likely to throw up. I had a puppy that was notorious for vomiting food after he ate so I would give him pepcid and it helped alot to keep the food down. The pup eventually out grew it.
I'm with Utopia. A dog will throw wup bile when he or she is hungry. My own pup has done it more times than I can count and before everyone jumps on me, she has been to the vet for this problem more than once. She is just not food motivated. . If she eats something in the morning, she's fine, but when she won't eat, up comes the bile. Yuck.
Dont worry about it Yorkimalt! With a name like MIA for a BOY its common to think He is a she! Mia is indeed a male. Full name is Mia-N-Jalo. Cute I thought!
Thank you and Utopia! Your thoughts ar very helpful. Mia just ate his breakfast and is fine, and he just went poo poo and that is fine too. I am thinking it was just all due to an empty tummy. I guess he is just hungry hungry today and his tummy needed food. I feed him the same time everyday tho.
I read a post about the same thing here a few weeks ago and they said the dog's stomach was empty and to feed the dog earlier so it does not get an upset tummy.
My two Min Pins did that sometimes in the morning. We were feeding them too late. I make sure they get something in their bellies earlier in the morning and I have not had that problem any more. The only time I see it now is if they ate something that does not digest. Georgie picked up some kind of pit with a stem on it the other day and threw up bile and the pit was in there.
Agree with everyone else. Mine will do that too if they don't eat and their tummies are empty. Its usually Max. I think Tina has before but Mandy doesn't know what it is to have her tummy empty. She is our little garabage disposal. ha!
I think that it's got to do with both the empty stomach and the rawhide, which really is pretty indigestible. It probably got his stomach acids flowing becuase the dog's body thought there was something worth digesting in there, but instead found rawhide. Lead to a nauseated sensation that caused the vomiting.
In the future perhaps feed the dog earlier and withold rawhide until after the meals.
Minnyar - I think you said it perfectly. Thats what I was wondering, if the rawhide was the problem being he had an empty stomach. He ate his breakfast right after and is fine. So thats what it was. I actually cant think of a time he ate rawhide before a meal with an empty tummy like today so this makes sense. I am going to get rid of rawhide all together and stick to Kongs for him.
