My dobi puppy is currently 4 1/2 months. We have been taping and re-taping his ears ever since we got him a month and a half ago. However, because we also have a 7 month old dobi puppy the taping often gets messed up and has to be retaped. We feel so bad for him and have left his ears hang down for a day or two at a time, which I know is a big "no no" but are they ruined? Currently, if I take his ears down they may stay up for a little bit, but then bend as if broken. Is there any way to reverse the broken ear OR if it is broken is it doomed?!?! I feel that if there is no hope then I can just take him out of his misery, but if there is still hope then I will continue to tape his ears. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

I was drawn by one sentence you have stated in this question! "If they are broken you are thinking of putting him out of his misery". By that do you mean you are going to put the little puppy to sleep just because its ears are not going to stand like you expect them to?
Please elaborate a little more on your plans for this little puppy.
If you are planning to put him out of his misery because of his ears, you truely need some help. The reason its ears may be "broken" is not the puppys fault, it is your own. you have clearly stated that you have left them flop down for a couple days before retaping them.
I don't know anything about dogs ears being cropped as my breed does not require this, but I doubt that ears being flopped is hurting the dog in any way. Someone else may be able to help here on if it hurts them or not but I don't think it does!!!!!!! (SCHOOLBUSGAL!!!)
Oh my gosh!!!! Are you crazy?!?!?!? Of course I meant just stopping taping his ears, NOT PUT HIM TO SLEEP!!!!!! He is my precious little baby boy!!! I just want to know if I have totally messed up his ears or if there is still something I can do to fix them properly!!!
Were his ears cropped when you got him - or did you have it done? I personally did not have that problem with either of mine but is sounds like the cartlige may be broken down if that is the case no ammount of tape is going to help. What does your vet say?
Ok I didn't think you'd want to put your dog to sleep just and IF his ears were gonna look funny, that would be a bit extreme! Do you have pictures? Because that might help us? Maybe your vet or a local breeder might be able to help too?
I understaood what you meant... If the ears are not going to stand, then why bother leaving the head gear on him. They hate all the tape on their ears.. and try to scrape it off by rubbing their heads on the walls, furniture whatever they can find.. I got ya. :)

They were cropped when I got him. They are the show crop, so they are really tall!!! So if the cartilage is broken then there is no hope? I haven't really talked to my vet very much about it b/c she is not so familiar with ear cropping I don't think.
My dobe's ears just got cropped, she is doing great. We took the ear stand off in 2 weeks after the surgery and they stood right away.
As for you situation I think you got the ears done too late. Normal ear croppings are between 14-16 weeks old, no later. The show crop is the tallest crop style and is the most difficult to train, for some the ear never stands. For those who show the secert is they tape the ears a few days in advance of the show and then remove them right before they go into the ring therefore the ear stands in the show ring for a short while and then flop right back down. Hope this helps.
If I were you, I would contact a vet that has knowledge with ear cropping-preferably knowlesge in Dobermans. WHy not call the breeder??? If you got the dog from a breeder that knows the breed well, (s)he should be able to help you. Sorry to say, but most often the breeder typically knows more about their own breed than a vet.
In my breed (Westies), The ears go up on their own, but sometimes show breeders have to tape them.. I've heard of some keeping the tape on them for months.. If plans are to show the dog, they have a lot of money invested in the dog already. They will do anything to get those ears to stand..
I am tentative to contact the breeder b/c I think she will be mad at me for "messing up" the ears! We got our pup to be a part of our family and when we got him the breeeder kep going on and on about how good of a show dog he could be, etc.
I'd contact the breeder, she could at least give you a name of a vet that has better knowledge. It is important to get a vet that is knowledgable in your breed. That is what I personally think. B/c you don't want to go to a vet that like 'hates' the breed of dog you own you won't get very good care, or a vet that doesn't know anything about cropping. You didn't mislead the breeder by telling her you might show your dog? b/c if its just a family pet (nothing wrong w/that of course!) then she will understand. She should understand that you want to do what's best anyway for your dog. If you are thinking of getting your dog's ears cropped again I'd make sure you go to a vet that is experienced and LOOk at pictures of his work.... Good luck :-)
When I had a dobe, her ears were cropped at 9 weeks. We had a vet that did unconventional taping and it worked great. Never had to put on a rack.
I would keep taping for a while yet, but don't give breaks from the taping. Make sure you have added calcium in the diet. I used cottage cheese. It's high in calcium. Your pup is still growing and calcium is important to bones and muscles.
Sorry...I just can hold back without saying anything...even though it sounds like a lot of people are for cropping here...but why would you do that to a poor dog?? I guess I can understand for showing purposes...but even so...I think it is cruel!! Let the poor dogs be!!!
