Ok, here's the problem... My pup refuses to go potty outside when it's raining. We were doing really good with the potty training and now I'm afraid I'm back to where I started. It has hardly rained in the last 5 weeks since I got her and now it's supposed to rain for the next 3 days. She HATES the rain. I take her out on a leash and make her stand in the rain and tell her to go potty, but she won't go. All she wants to do is go back inside. We both end up getting soaked and she still won't go. She stands at the door whining to get out, but once we're out she just wants back in and then ends up going in the house. Luckily I have hard wood floors, so it's easy to clean, but I'm just afraid now this will be a big set back. I've tried laying newspaper on the floor by the door, but all she wants to do with that is play with it and tear it to pieces.
So what do I do now? Just let her go in the house and pray that I'm not back to square one when the rain finally does stop??
If my dogs went potty in the house because they didn't want to go in the rain, it got them tossed outside into the rain until my mood was such that I was willing to let them in.
Regarding not being willing to go outside in the rain in the first place, well I'm cruel. We have a fenced in yard, our dogs aren't tiny so when it rains they went out whether they want to or not and I stood at the doorw atching for them to go potty. As soon as they went, immediately they got to come inside.
If you've got a small dog or no fence, you've just got to be patient ennough to outwait your dog. Either be willing to stand out there for hours with an umbrella or by leaving the dog outside while you are inside. Don't stand in one place, walk your dog around in circles so she can't be sitting up on the stairs or under the overhang.
As it is now, your'e teaching your dog two things. First off, if she fusses enough she doesn't have to be outside in the rain. And Second, it's ok to go inside when it rains.
We've been having ridiculous downpours here in VA, and this weekend taking Mason outside to potty was a bit tricky. It was his first time in this type of weather. He did potty outside with some reluctance, but I have to admit that I did hold an umbrella over him. I know, I know, I'm spoiling him.....:)
Crate training is wonderful for housebreaking. If she wont potty, back in the crate she goes. If she wants out then outside she goes. No other options, period, until she does what she's supposed to where she's supposed to. She'll learn fast that her morning freedom doesn't start until she does her business and it wont hurt her a bit.
Your story got me laughing loud, lol. I thought that was really funny, but I know your situation. I have 2 dogs that refuses to go out side when it rains, one because he doesn't like the water to begin with, the other because she hates the cold rain, but I have no problem with my other dog, she loves water, weather it's warm or cold, she'll do her business out side powring rain or not, we'll both get soack and wet cause it does take her a few minutes to get that position of just where she wants to do it. Regarding the others, they kind of do it in the house anyways, I know i get to clean up their mess, and it's worse for me because I have carpet in the room they sleep in. I can't put news papers cause that will turn into their play toy. I just have to clean it up. I guess I'll have to figure something out soon, but they'll be gone soon, at least one is going end of this week. I am keeping the one I'm close to, the one that loves the rain. Sorry I have no suggestion for you except of take it one day at the time. Try buying those soak cloth, those training cloth and sit her there when she needs to go, and tell her ok, potty now, or whatever you say to her when it's that time, she'll know she can go there and only there, try putting it in the bathroom, maybe that will help, I don't know just a suggestion you can try, it doesn't her to try, right.
