The Walmart in West Des Moines where I used to live would let you bring your dog (if you carried it in) to the photography area to have photos taken, and that's it. I don't think they're trying to be jerks, but as someone mentioned before, health code, etc. :)

Some moron brought their chihuahua into the grocery store the other night, in the produce section. It was disgusting to me. I got the manager, and apologized that I would have to go to another store this time. The morons got the boot.

I too take Merphy a lot of places, but if they don't allow dogs, then I wait to go until I don't have him with me. I took him on vacation with me last year, and every place I went was very accepting of him in Solvang, Monterey, and San Fransisco (he was in a backpack carrier). But then again, I asked permission to bring him in before entering.

As for WalMart, I'm more afraid of the germs Merphy would pick up there, than what germs he would leave behind.

I take my dogs to "pet friendly" places. Petsmart is great for them to socalize and pick up leashed, collars, etc...

I would NEVER even consider taking them to a grocery store, that's just gross!! (and not curtious to others)

I am with pretty much everyone else here no dogs policies are there for a reason and expecially if there is food in there, the other day there was a woman in wal mart in slave lake, in alberta, canada, with her pomeranian, because it was too hot in the car, so why not leave the dog at home, that is what I do.

There needs to be a line drawn here. Just because you can put it in a bag and tote it around like a fashion accessory does not make it right. If we were all allowed to bring in our pets, do you understand that the prices would go up due to liability insurance. Do you have insurance to cover your dog if he or she bit someone?
Sorry, I think we are crossing the line a little too much here. Dogs are not fashion accessories and sure would run and jump in a meat case and help themselves if they could.
Does anyone remember Susan Powter-the shaved head, weight loss person? she hit it on the head when she said-'Stop the Insanity'!

Why is it gross and disgusting to bring a dog to a store or restaurant, but it is okay with service dogs? If they don't spread germs erverywhere, why do pet dogs?

Well the perhapse 1 per week service dog that oges into a place is a heck of a lot different than the several per hour of pet dogs.

You add to that that a service dog is trained, well trained, it has to be to do its job, they are trained to only potty on command, and never while in harness, or working. Although most ppl think their pets are well trained few are well enough to go into a food place un noticed.

A service dog for the blind and/or disabled is 1000 times different then someone wanting to take their pet inside.

Scottie, your first post and you are already causing trouble.
A Service dog is SO much different then a pet dog. You're comparing apples to oranges. No comparision. Perhaps if you needed a service dog you'd feel differently.

I have never tried to take my dogs into a store that specifies "no animals" because there are legitimate reasons for it and rules are rules. We have taken them to outdoor patios but only a couple of times.

When we had a gift store, I did not say anything to people with small dogs that had them in a bag or held them. In our 10 years there, I think there were only 6 or 7 times someone brought in their pet dogs and one time someone had a guinea pig.

Service dogs would come in and never left a mess and were very behaved.

I am not causing trouble, I am just asking a question. I really do not understand, why a welltrained, clean dog is any different from a hygienic point of view than a service dog.
If it is not possible to ask questions here, plaese let me know so I can leave before I waste any more time!

Average dog I meet in the neighbourhood or dog park has no manners. My own dog with far more training than most is far from perfect.

A service dog will ignore the distraction, and not do anything at all. Will wait patiently and calmly and out of the way enough it shouldn't be an event to point out or notice.

Id people's dogs were better trained, maybe they'd be allowed in more places (that have no food) but I see that as a shot in the dark for people actually making an effort.

so these stores are supposed to have a person at the door to evaluate every dog someone wants to bring in to make sure they are trained well enough to not jump into the food, I highly doubt that. The service dogs are a different story all together you know that they are well trained because they are service dogs. They are trained so that when in harness they do not approch other people, they do not even put their head down to so much as sniff something, they do not eat while in harness either.

You can argue all you want that a well trained pet has just as much right, but the bottom line is that the service dog is there for a purpose, to help its owner live an independant live. A pet is just that a pet there is no reason for your little fluffy to go to the grocery store with you. If you cant leave her at home alone then you should have trained her better, sorry, I have adog with seperation issues he stays at home where he belongs, I dont try or even want to take him to wal mart.

Scottie - Anyone can say their dog is well trained or well behaved. A service dog has been trained. A guide dog wears a special harness. You can't just buy them, they come from the training facilities and would be difficult to duplicate. And even service dogs can have accidents. I was buying dog food Thursday at a small local pet food store. They had put a sign up in the window that said no dogs. Why? because they had had a service dog in the store earlier that day that had an accident on the carpet. So accidents can happen even with the best trained animal. As for hygiene, well some dogs are kept cleaner than others. It's easier to keep all dogs (except service) out of a store.

The reason why I am asking is, I am from Germany and there you can bring dogs in many stores (no foodstores of any kind) und many restaurants. I took my dog to restaurants all the time, he was quietly lieing under the table as did the other dogs that happened to be there und most of the time you would not even notice them. I never in my life saw a dog having an "accident" in a store or restaurant. I allways woundered why this is not possible here.
I understand perfectly that service dogs have special training, but being housebroken is very basic and every dog should be able to manage it!

My dogs are well-behaved as far as I'm concerned. But if I were to take them to WalMart, they would be all over the Oscar Mayer. Good manners are checked at the door.

And what they couldn't eat fast enough, would no doubt be licked on.

Shadow says it best, leave the dogs at home.

I didn't see any signs that said no dogs allowed (just no smoking), and the ironic thing is that my friend, whome I was with, was holding her dog as well......she was a few steps in front of me so he may have not seen her.....the only reason why I say I'm shocked it because I have seen MANY small breed dogs in their owners hands or on a leash (!) at walmart, and any other store for that matter. whatever, I don't care, its not like she always comes with me, I would rather keep her at home anyways....the walmart trip was completely unplanned, it was on our way home, and the only place open at that late for propane tanks!

I can NOT believe that Wal Mart would post a sign saying "no dogs allowed" and then actually show you the door when you ignored the sign and took your dog in anyway... THOSE PEOPLE HAVE SOME NERVE I TELL YOU!! :p

I looked for the sign at the door, there was none. just a no smoking sign. that was it!!! I triple checked when I left and there was NOTHING!!!! my friend looked for it too!!! If we're blind, then I guess we both need service dogs!!:) then there will be no problems:)
