There's only one breed of dog that I'd say doesnt bark, and that's the Basenji. They instead have a kind of yodeling sound. Some breeds are quieter than others, for example the Greyhound is known to be a very quiet breed in general.
Don't let people tell you siberian husky doesn't bark.. that may not be barking in the truest sense of the words but they can be noisy as heck.
I have a friend who has whippets, and while I'd personally not consider them to be 'barky dogs' she's said that one will occaiionally bark at strange noises. The other could care less. I wouild classify them as not nearly as noisy as terriers and some of the working/protective breeds.
i only ask cause i live in a apartment and i know most dogs bark.i just read somewhere that there is a dog that doesnt bark but makes noises....anyways im just looking for a dog that rarely barks, something suitable for an apartment
lol. you are right a husky is the nosiest thing! But if you enjoy their singing it really don't bother you. But wouldn't be suitable for someone living that close to others that may not like the ruckus!
My Mastiff barked 3 times in the 12 years that I owned her...but she would be a bit big for an apartment.
My Lhasa Apso rarely barks, and he never barked until I put him in a kennel for a weekend. My Yorkie barks at everything, so now the Lhasa barks at him, since I am constantly telling the yorkie to shut up, I think Merphy's just trying to reiterate that in dog language!
I woulnd't recommend either a basenji or a shiba inu for someone fairly new to dogs. Both are extremely independent dogs that were originally bred for hunting, they're not so 'eager to please' as some other breeds. I've personally met a couple of very nasty shiba inus. One was even a 'show' one that had his ch title. Neither breed is *rare* rare but theyre not that common either. I strongly recommend you do a lot of research on the breeds at the national breed club and through book at your local library or bookstore.
im nt new to dogs, ive had around 12 of them(probaly not a lot for someone whos 19)but ive trained most of them myself and they were pretty obedient except for my poodle....hes very smart except he barks at everything....not that sure how to stop that...anyways im just looking for a good apartment dog that doesnt bark much.i was thinking about a cocker spaniel, ive had one before and she was a great dog and rarely barked....lots of choices though...
My cocker spaniel rarely barked until we taught it to bark. Then it would bark quite often and the bark was rather loud for such a small dog, but it was only barking because we reinforced the behavior, obviously. We were living in the country and noise was not an issue.
Now, I live in an apartment, and personally, I don't think I would keep any dog there.
