Please correct me if I'm wrong with what I'm about to type!...

If your main objective was to get a puppy to be playmate to your JRT. Please be careful with this puppy! Even at 12 weeks old this puppy is still very young! My JRT puppy is only a week older. They require endless amounts of luv, attention and plenty of supervision. When this new pup wants to nap it needs to be left alone. A JRT won't respect this. That particular breed of dog doesn't seem to come with an off/on switch. Also a JRT likes to be the center of attention. Needing lots of "one on one" play interaction with it's owners.

Sorry to keep asking more questions but could my JRT be depressed from having a new dog brought in to the picture. I really want this to work so maybe they will do better over the weekend. I am going to ask the breeder if I can keep him for at least the weekend to think about it and see how they react to one another.

Like humans, dogs do occasionally suffer from bouts of depression. They get mopey, lethargic, stop eating, and drink only minimal amounts of water, stop wanting to play, and even lose drastic amounts of weight.


I came across this in a book of mine. Does your JRT sound as though he's experiencing these symptons? By the way... never be sorry for asking a question! Were all in the same Pet boat so to speak! (LOL) :)

I do agree that dogs can get depressed.

It will probably take some time for the dogs to get along. Maggie did pull a day or 2 of moping after the intial excitment of the puppy. That was when we split up our time with them so Maggie would see she is still "top dog". I even gave her a few extra treats (beagles are food motivated). Things are still rollercoaster here with the 2 but I know it will adjust itself. Hannah is growing and becoming more fun to play with now that she is playing by Maggies "play rules". Hannah makes up a few new games herself and has toughened up too (with a few extra pounds to tumble with).

Give the JRT and the new puppy lots of kisses and walks. I bet they will be fine!

Shih tzu's, bichons, poodles are tough little dogs. Maybe since its a puppy, it doesn't seem that way now, but it will grow up to be fine with the JRT. My shih tzu can play with a dog of any size and give it a run for its money.
