hi there!! I was wondering if anyone knows if there is such a thing as breeding your dog too early. I realize that female dogs have their heat cycle for 21 days. I got my female jack russell together with the male on the 6th day of her cycle, I realize this is a bit early, but she was willing to be bred. Anyways, they also mated three other times. I took her away from the male on the 11th day of her cycle. Therefore, she did not bred again!! Anyways, it has been exactly one week since the end of her recorded 21 day cycle. I have read in several books that you will start to notice a change in temperament. She seems normal to me! Also, I read that her vagina will stay a little swallon and not go back down to normal size. it seems to be smaller than when she was bleeding, and her nipples are a little enlarged, but not much!! I realize that it is probably too soon to actually tell if she is pregnant or not. But, is there such a thing as breeding her to soon??? And I read that I can get her abdomen palpitated during the 4th week. So, if the visual signs dont quiet show up, then I will take her to the vet. Just wondering if anyone has had their dog get pregnant in the early stages of their cycles?? Any advice or information would be of great help!! Thanks!!
Hi. The fact that she stood for the male at 7 days won't hurt anything, but it could be a possibility that you didn't let them breed long enough. When you say they bred 3 times, did you let them breed every day--3 days in a row, or every other day? If it was every other day, she MIGHT have gotten pregnant. I wait till the 9th day after I see blood on my female Bostons and then I let them breed with the male every other day for 3-4 times. So, they are breeding for about a week. Is this her second heat cycle, or more? Because nipples always look a little bigger and swollen after the 1st time a female comes in heat. Maybe she will be pregnant. Good luck
Never mind, I see that you said you took her away from the male on the 11th day of her cycle. If that was the 11th day after you first saw blood from her, then she is probably pregnant. Usually the female won't accept the male unless it is time for her to breed--but not always.
Thanks for the information!! She was still bleeding on the 11th day when I took her home with me. They didnt breed every day, it was every other..so that is good news, hopefully!!! This is her third heat cycle, so that is why it is hard for me to tell. The first heat, like you said, she had very pronounced nipples and gential enlargement. And it didnt go down as fast as it did this time. I actually have a neutered 4yr. old jack russell, also, and after I brought her back from the stud, my male actually tied with her on the 15th day. It was weird, I didnt think neutered dogs still had that sexual drive, but I guess so. Just the fact, that she was still so willing to except a male's advancements, neutered or not, made me think that I bred her a little to soon. But only time will tell, and if she didn't get pregnant, then we will try again next time, and wait a little longer in her cycle before I get them together. Thanks again!!
