As I said earlier I got Cheerio (my daughter named her) from an abusive situation where she didn't have much food and attention. They found her as a stray. Is there anyway to tell how old Cheerio is??? She is very docile like an older dog but that could have also been from the abuse. How can one tell on a dog?
A dog is not like a horse.. Vets can't accurately tell the age of a dog by it's teeth. Ive seen a 10 month old akita that has the teeth of a dog 10 years old. I've also seen 10 year old dogs with the white teeth of a puppy (but they had tell-tale white hairs in their nose).
You caan age a puppy by it's teeth but adults are far far harder.
I w/tend to believe (IMO) that the Vet w/be your best bet. I had a dog that I rescued, had no idea how old she was, so I asked the Vet one day, he said "around 8 yrs". I already had her going on 10 years, I guess that is as good as it gets. That was probably a year ago, This past April I had to have her put down, & it was the hardest thing I ever did, & the first time (I'm gettin teary eyed just typing this), but I know in my heart she had it a lot better w/me than where she was, I gave her my best. She still had her spunky little spirit about her, but her body was breakin down. Those last few moments still haunt me, so I try & remember how she used to run & her ears w/flap in the wind, or how she w/spring straight up from standing when we walked by the door, & I could see her head bob up to the window. She was a Black Lab Mix..............sleep well my lil Pepper girl..................
