I have an silky terrier that will be an yr old august 1st. This week she started rounding up her stuff animals and treating them like an litter. She also for some reason has to be real close to me. She even sticks the toy underneath her like she is nursing them. Her next heat won't be until oct.
She maybe going through a false pregnancy. She is all girl and her instincts are telling this is what she wants suppose to do. Is what I would guess heard about this in female dogs before. Never seen it though myself. So are you planning on breeding her?
Yes. I know exactly what you are saying. Mandy (mini schnauzer) will go get a baby out of their toy box every nite after they eat and she will walk with it in her mouth and whine. We go through this every night. We have wondered if it was because she missed having a baby.
I can't believe I just read that! My dog Maggie does the same EXACT thing - every night too! Same baby dolly and if she can't find it she goes crazy. The dolly is Alfonso and after carrying it and whining for a while she gives it a quick bath and puts it to bed.
Maggie is spayed and has been since 6 months. She never went thru a heat cycle either. I have no clue why she does this but anyone who has seen it is a bit amazed!
They call that nesting, Did she just go through heat in the recient past.
There are three stages to the heat cycle Proestrus, this is when she drips blood spots all over the floor, the second phase is Estrus (standing heat) this is when when she will accept the male and breed, the third phase Diestrus is basicly her insides cleaning out although she will still emit a scent for the males to follow she will more than likely not be interested in them. Although most dogs will not mate during the 1st and 3rd phases of the cyclel it is still a remote possibility so don't let your gaurd down.
As for nesting it usually follows the Diestrus as this is when they will have the pups inside of them. Most dogs will loose all interest after Diestrus, however, some believe they are with pups and they start nesting.

I am planning on breeding her next yr. This coming up heat I will be in the middle of an move. Her last heat was in apri.
I am glad someone else has gone thru this. She is also stuck to me with glue it seems like. She sits on the couch almost on job of me, and I cant get her to sleep in her crate. I am proably making an big mistake but I am allowing her to sleep with me and my other dog until this is all over.
I have never seen this before. Pixie just doesnt' do it every nite, it is all day long. Well I dont' know what she does when I am not home, but this weekend it sure is all day long. Also is seems to be one certain on. She will whine with it on her mouth until I pick her up and then she is fine. So I am wondering what my part is in all this?

To beagle/basset, Mandy is also spayed. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. It does almost look like they miss being a momma. At the vets the other day someone come in with a basket of puppies. Mandy just stared and then started over to them. Of course I had her on a leash and didn't let her get close but it was like she was so curious. I guess that is the first time she has ever seen any real puppies. She probaby didn't know what to think. ha!!
