New to the forum, new to the breed, and need real facts from some of you pro's. Have heard nothing but negative "stories" of the friend of a friend of a friend who had their throat torn out by the long time family pet pit. Have 4 dogs, two of which are pits. All former strays or abused animals from a chiuawiua (misspelled) who was tortured and burned w/cigarettes to the most sweetest pitbull left to die in the woods behind my house w/a bullet between her eyes staring from an emaciated body w/choke chain embedded in her neck and throat cut. Have had 3 wonderful years now with this gentle beast. Got my 2nd pit 3wks ago who was thrown out of a vehicle. Same loving traits. I am now a pit lover and will always own them above any other breed and am trying to find factual truth about them. Hear,s what i,ve heard from the friend of a friend type person. As they get older they will turn on you, meaning me. One day you will come home to find your little chiuahua dead (they love her) or your cats will be torn apart. These are the cats that sleep in the dog beds WITH my pits.I have NEVER seen any aggression in either of my pits toward me other folks or animals. I even use one as a nursing home visiter. I do not believe these stories and i do not believe they are savages as portrayed by the media, the same media who never reports that the moody cocker spaniel is more bite prone to small children or others. Will someone respond to this and tell me that i have nothing to worry about and that these are myths. I do know "any" breed Can turn. You know animals suffer sometimes as we do in their elder years with dementia or brain tumors which alot of people don,t realize.
They should not turn on you. Some good places to go to learn more about the breed are: www.pbrc.net and www.realpitbulls.com Both are great. I have a rescued pit mix, he is the sweetest dog in the world and my weimaraner is more likely to attack than he is to even growl or sohw any aggression at all towards anyone. He was abused, also, and it has caused him to fear men.
My friends boyfriend has raised pits all of his life, he says he never lets them reach the age of six because "it is a known fact that their brain outgrows their skull." Not wanting to pick a fight I kept my angry remarks to myself. I have not known a lot of pits, but the ones I have met were wonderful beautiful dogs. What are some thoughts on the boyfriends choice of raising his pets?
X Jessica that's sick ,and it more rumors being spread. That just makes me so mad. Pit Friend ,you helping these abused pits,it's awsome.I know personally with my own dogs ,I do seperate them because if they ever did decide to get into a fight with each other it wouldn't end with one submitting,it would end with one being killed most likely.Seperate the dogs when you are not there to supervise . A crate is the best tool to use.Pick up the book called Pit Bulls for dummies,or go to PBRC,there's lots of helpful info . The dogs will not all of a sudden one day turn on you.If a dog has a tempermant problem, this is something you will see coming a long time before hand.I think you are a wonderful person for helping these dogs. Also any sort of proffessional training would be a great help, bullys are very stubborn, and lots of socialization,I see one is a therapy dog)awsome). Good luck to you.
Pit Friend ,one other point ,please don't confuse animal aggression with human aggression,it's not the same.Remember what this breed was originally bred for ,as fighters with each other.Just a point to remember.
anyone have a good pit rescue site?? i just want to check them out...see if owning one would be a good idea for me. ps. rednosed i love your site, it's very informative. so sorry about you sweethearts...
Lily Wolf thank you. A good site that has helped me is PBRC-it stands for Pit Bull Rescue Central. They have some realy beautiful dogs. I wish I could take another one. Financially I know now I couldn't.Plus Tiggers reaction to adult dogs, even though with a lot of work she would become accepting.
i just saw jessica's post...i couldn't help but laugh! if your friends boyfriend believes that, then maybe his brain out grew his skull....LOL...could you imagine!! a guy walking around with his brain sticking out on all sides of his head!!it's kinda gross really. people who believe rumors like that would have to be kinda stupid...sorry if i offended anyone...but it's true....
Thank you luvapit and rednosered for informing me of the pbrc site. Even though i have never seen any signs of aggression between the pits or the rest of my assorted herd, i do separate them when i,m out which just kills them. Because i read they will Not submit and will fight to the death so although i trust them completely i will not take any chances. All my dogs stay in sight of each other, play together, groom each other and sleep in a huge pile on top of one another with one or two cats thrown in which brings up another ?. All the books i"ve read say they do not like cats. Am so glad my pits don"t know that. Of course the very first thing i did with my pits and all other arrivals, was to get them fixed immediately. xjessicaxburgix, About the pit breeding boyfriend. That is the same hogwash i always heard about dobies. Am raising my fifth dobie now, who"s eight. Never had any aggressive behavior shown to me, or others or other pets even though their brains allegedly become pinched by the skull as they age. Surely out of five at least one of them should have become homicidal were this true. All my pets are raised with love, patience and kindness so they display those qualities to others. In return i get their love and extreme loyalty, but woe to the one that would try to harm me. I have no doubt my gentle people loving dogs will protect me to the death.
PitFriend about the cats. My dogs get along fine with all my house cats, but one that doesn't belong to the home, well they better run is all I can say. They don't leave my yard unleashed, but if a cat happen to walk in,well run.
XjessicaXburgiX, personally i don't think your friends boyfriend needs to be breeding he knows nothing of the breed if he says that. People like him are the ones that give the breed the bad rap. Pitfriend, What you have done is great and what most people tell you about it pit bull is bull. Pits are wonderful althought as rednosered said very stubborn as with any bully breed. Proper socialization is the key! It already sounds like you have doing a great job and ignore the people that tell you the turn on you, they are full of it and they are the reason so many people think the same. Talk to these people and let them know that is false. I don't own a Pit Bull but i try me hardest to tell people that it is all the owner not the breed. If everyone was to take a stand and let everyone know maybe the breed will not be looked at in this way!!!
"These are the cats that sleep in the dog beds WITH my pits" Very Cute! It sounds as though MABEY your pits had a good home before the bad owners, and realized that not all humans are bad. Thank you for rescueing them! This really makes me happy. By what you have typed, your dogs don't seem people or dog agressive. That is great! As rednosered said, when you are away, keep one of them in a crate or in another room somewhere, and keep the chihuahua away too. Then only one dog is roaming around.
They weren't originally bred to fight, they were bred to hunt and be used as working dogs, it just eventually became a sport for people to watch dogs fight. This is where they get all their animal aggression from, I have had problems with this myself so if I were you I'd definately watch all your dogs to make sure they don't get too wound up and are getting along with eachother alright.
I would just like to give a quick example of how fast things can get ugly. Tigger yestarday got a hold of a Ground Hog and killed it. To her she thinks she has done the greatest thing in the world ,and when she's out in the back ,she's been gaurding the body.Well today Piper got too close to the body before I had a chance to throw it over the field behind our back yard, and the fight was on. If I wasn't out there, some one was going to get very badly hurt. I stopped it before any blood flew. This was so fast and furious, a motto to live by being a Pitty owner, never trust a Pitty not to fight. If you follow this ,there will no surprises .
Hey, Just wanted to clear something up....I never said he breeds pits. He has just always had them. He gets a new puppy about a year before he puts the other one down, but never lets them near each other. I think that in itself is a huge problem with any dog. Without propper socialization no dog is going to do well with other dogs.
jessica am i understanding you correctly? the guy euthanizes his pits when they turn six years old because he thinks their brains have gotten too big for their skulls and they are going to become mean? do you like live in the ozarks somewhere? (no offense to you). is it truly possible for someone to be THAT STUPID!!! and what about his vet? his veterinarian is going along with this stupidity and euthanizing them? i can't by forum rules tell you exactly what i think of this person and his vet. please don't keep your angry feelings to yourself and set this j***a** straight!!!!!!!!
pitfriend the people are right to warn you, you should never leave them alone together(which I read you don't) and could find your Chi dead or the cats or the pit bulls themselves. Sometimes it doesn't take much for a dog fight to break out, doesn't mean the dogs have to be aggressive or bicker over things constantly. There is a thread going right now on 2 Shar Peis that have been together for 5 1/2yrs with no problems that had a fight with severe injuries while the owner was not home. They are right to warn you, but are doing so in the WRONG way for the wrong reasons and trying to prove they are vicious or unpredictable when any dog of any breed can get into a fight. I can't believe the ignorance of some people these days. What breed will it be next? I can't believe that guy, doesn't allow them to reach the age of 6??? So what he PTS?? When will that myth ever die, the same bs they used about the Dobie. I know pits between the ages of 6-13 not anymore aggressive, still the same sweet temperament. OMG and we wonder why the breed is in such a bad state. A so called Pit Bull "pet owner" who is supposed to "love" dogs, the reason for having them as pet who culls dogs before 6 so they don't turn on him. Some love, some knowledge of the breed.
Lily Wolf, I just read these posts and I totally agree with everything everyone said. It's wonderful that she's adopted such abused animals, and they know it. But what I really wanted to say is thank you. I laughed so hard when I read your post about the guys brain growing out of his head I almost fell over. literally. It's 1:00am and I work full time, have 4 kids, 3 dogs, and 2 rabbits and I go to school full time (online). So I was doing "homework" (sounds funny at my age) and I took a break to read the posts and I really needed that laugh. Not that what he is doing is in the least bit funny. It's sick and he doesn't deserve any dog, but I just can't get that picture out of my head.
i was hoping it would be read and make someone laugh. :) thanks for posting...that really made my day...:) jeesh! if pit bull's brians start to out grow the skull at age 6, and this guy has the same thing......MAN!!! it must be HUGE!!!!! ......but honestly...i always thought the more brain you have, the smarter you are....Guess that's not true in this case. :P
