My dog, the shihtzu and toy poodle mix, Duchess.. recently started coughing. She did it the first time at the beginning of this month and i'd never heard her do it before. She'd done it about 3 times since then. To get her to stop, all I have to do is cover her nose. I've researched heartworms and it says it takes at least 6 months for those to show up and she's only 8 months... and that it's transfered by a mosquito... she has only recently been going outside at all within' the past 2 months. Before that she was trained to puppy pads because I liked to keep her hair long, and she got so hot so fast. My question is.. is the coughing ALWAYS heartworms or even worse... congestive heart failure? I'm going to give myself ulcers worrying about this. I hope to take her to the vet tomorrow, or the day after.
I wanted to also add that the other night, while I was gone.. she had a spout with severe seperation anxiety and started eating the boards under my carpet by my door. It was shredded, and i'm wondering if she ate some of that.. if it could be causing this coughing as well?

worrying bout 3 coughing episodes in the past month is you being paranoid IMHO heh. If she started coughing and was unable to stop, that'd be worth taking her to the vet. But the fact that it's not happening that often, that you can get her to stop, that's nothing.
i might be way off base here but it kind of sounds like reverse sneezing to me...i had a teeny poodle who did iut...still does and she is over 12 now...the key that striks me is when she would get excited and do it..grabbing her and holding her muzzle and even blowing into her nose seemed to stop the episode...good luck to you...and if your concerned...please ask your vet..
huron, I was thinking the same thing. My chi does that on occassion. Not so much now as she did when she was a pup, but it has a different sound to it. My pug did get kennel cough once and it sounded different. Of course that could just be that she is a pug :)
