hi there, my 9 week old boston is showing some real aggression by biting my hands HARD and chewing on my shirt sleeves and other things and when i try to play with her she want to almost attack me! i do not know if this is wrong or not or just being a puppy but i swear she is being literally mean! i try to discipline her with "NO"! but she is so stubborn and willful that all i can do is pry her mouth open to get off me and i try to hold her and love her up instead to calm her down but she just wants to get down and bite me some more. anyone have any ideas on this? funny i almost feel afraid of her!
how long have you had her? at what age did you get her from the breeder? betwen the ages of 5 and 8 weeks puppies in a litter start showing signs of dominance and will start playing very rough and biting each other to determine rank order. at this time they also learn bite inhibition from their littermates. i f a pup bites another pup too hard the pup that got bit will squeal and walk away. that teaches the biter that he has bit too hard and they learn not too do it again. the very first thing you need to stop doing is holding her and loving her after she has bitten you. you are only reinforcing her biting behavior, you are actually rewarding her for biting. when you are playing and she starts to get too rough say no in a VERY stern voice, do not yell it, get up and walk away. she may still come after you and bite what is available such as feet but totally ignore her. when she calms down you can start paying attention to her but do not immediately start playing with her again or she may get all riled up again. if she doesn't get the hint when you ignore her then carry a spray bottle filled with water and squirt her in the mouth when she is biting. if these ideas don't work then you can try the scruff shake and alpha roll. grab her by the back of the neck where all the loose skin is and tell her NO!! then release her and ignore her again. that is how a mother disciplines her pups when they get out of hand, a growl and a scruff shake. an alpha rol is where you put the puppy on her back and hold her still for about 30 seconds AFTER she stops squirming. it may be a few minute process but do not let her up til she has stopped squirming. hope this helps.
You can also put tabasco sause or lemon juice on your hands, so they learn the taste is very bad. Or fill a squirt bottle with 1/4 vinegar and 3/4 water and squirt them full in the mouth or face whenever they try to bite you. Almost all dogs go through a mouthy phase.
oh wow! what wonderful ideas and painless too! actually molly is about 9 weeks old now and we got her and her brother max, max is about 11 weeks now, and they are half brother/sister. same father. i see both of them taking turns at being aggressive, so i assume they are both trying to be top dog by doing this. i had wondered if molly was showing some jealousy towards max but they both get alot of love and attention so i don't know how that could be. i will try the "no" method and walking away and see if that helps...they definitely need to learn that "no" word as they are already seemingly getting out of hand. molly is mostly, she is quite obstinante while max is such a docile little guy.. he is such a cuddler and molly loves to lay on my chest right under my chin...too funny.. they are such fun and loving little spirits and i hate to break their spirits by having to get rough with them but am afriad i really need to put my foot down as they are taking over!
If your dogs are being aggressive with each other, the best thing to do is just to let them do their thing. One will become dominate over the other, and as soon as the order is decided, the household will settle down. The only time you should break them up is if they are literally fighting. If they are being aggressive but it hasn't escalated to something bad, just assume that they are trying to dominate each other. As for aggression to you, you need to teach your dogs that you are the alpha wolf, and that you should be regarded as #1.
this may sound ignorant but how does one teach a dog that you are the alpha? as for the aggression she had towards me it seems to be better today. i think part of it may have been that her half brother was on bedrest because he had thrown up in his sleep and swallowed it and had aspiration phenomia (sp)? we could of lost him! so we had to keep him quiet and she had only me to try to beat up on, i guess, lol. either way they are still fighting and for the most part it seems to be play but then they get aggressive wth each other and it sounds like they are n a real battle! should i break it up if they do this too often or just hope they out grow it?
jamieileana, did you buy the brother first and then the sister, or did you buy them at the same time? if the brother was there first then he sees himself above her cuz he was the first choice and she is the second....my fience's dogs had the same thing, max is a few years older then daisy and was trying to tell her that he was the one above her, but she thought otherwise. And the family was inforcing daisy's take by giving her treats first and petting her first. Whenever max tried to set it right they yelled at him saying, "Max! Stop being mean to Daisy!" I knew he was just trying to tell her who's boss, but i had no say in it....i guess on time he finally was able to set it straight and now she knows that he is the boss....though sometimes he does need to remind her. what i'm saying is don't break it up, but don't leave them alone when they are fighting. i'm sure they don't want to hurt eachother, they are just trying to show who's the alpha, besides you....they will settle it themselves. :) hope it helps! oh, one more thing...naturally, stop the fighting if you believe it has gotten to rough.
thank you lilly and tomato. we did get them at the same time so maybe they are both fighting for dominance? today i did have to break them up. they were in the same kennel so they could play together and they started their usual rant then it sounded just horrible! so i put max in his own kennel and now all is quiet again. i hope they figure out real soon who is the boss, me! lol. so they can quit this nonsense..it does have me worried. i think molly could possible me jealous of max because he is smaller and he wants to always cuddle so he gets a tiny bit more attention but she wants to play instead so it is her own doings...we never turn her away from attention either! never! thanks again for all the replies..this is one busy borad!!!
jamie they are probably vying for the dominant position between them selves. they may both have dominant personalities so that may be why it is taking so long for them to straighten it out.however it has always been my experience a female will always win out over a male. treat them exactly the same. before treats are given make them both sit and give at the same time. same goes for mealtimes and anything else fun and enjjoyable. gotta tell you they must only weigh about 2 or 3 pounds so it must be kinda funny to watch them squabble.also cause of their short noses they must make some real loud snorting noises that may make it sound much worse then it may really be.
scout, thanks again for the advice. they are so hyper though it is hard to make them wait for anything, too young to teach that i thought but will give it a try. i think the female wins out in any breed, haha! just kidding, well sorta, lol. it is funny to watch them because they are so small! max weighs 3.4 and molly weighs 3.6 pounds...so they are very tiny and ohhhh soooo cute! i wish i could post their pics on there somehow... thanks again for the tips and i will try the making them wait thingy for their food/treats/toys, etc..
scout, they are just as adorable as mine! lol! they are now pup pals too! you have some very gorgeous and funny and silly and so cute looking ones on your page! what is the purpose o f this site anyway, just to use as a link to show off your pets? what a wonderful and novel idea someone had in creating that dogster page!
yep just a page for us to show off our babies!!! most of the pup pals on scouts page are the dogs of the posters here on this board. we are all proud moms and dads. if you look up the old thread here on the forum called dogster you will see many links of everyones pets. all cuties too!!!!!!
