Zuke doesn't even want to go into his kiddie pool and I moved it into the shade. He is a house dog, but he LOVES to be outside, but this heat has turned him into a pansy. That's not very nice to say, but it's true...normally, he would never turn down his pool :)
This is where he's been hanging out for the past two days
For one, if you want to cool him off, be sure to cool off his belly not his back. Hold a cold rag on his belly or wet a towel completely and wrap it around him. I also have a cooling pad that goes around the neck, that seems to help.
They also sell cooling mats on Petedge.com I put mine in a cooler with ice or in the bathtub for 30 mins and it stays cold for a few days. You can put it on his bed (with a thin blanket on top if he doesnt like to touch it) and that will also keep him cool.
Mine are down in my office in the basement with me. The wo girls that showed today begged to go into their crates to nape. Everyone is zonked out on a couch or dog bed in the cool. I'd not ask them to stay out in the heat unless they wanted to, and if it was any hotter its mandatory in my house that dogs come in.
If I am going to be out on a day over 90 degrees they have to come inside before I leave. Same thing if the temp is below 40.
my daughter put ice in the pool, but I think that it's just so hot outside that he didn't even want to give it a shot...he headed right back to the porch and layed down by the door.
Zuke likes the basement, too, but I need to get some kind of traction/grippy things for my stairs, they are kind of slippery and I would never forgive myself if he got hurt on them. He's still a pup, so he's kind of clumsy still :)
I keep the house very cool, my electric bill will no doubt break the mail carrier's back...but I'm going to check on the cooling pads...I have to spoil my baby! haha
Mine like the tub sometimes. Their favorite way to cool off is to find a wet spot in the yard (spilled water bucket, washed car, chewed hose, etc.) and dig, dig, dig until they have a hole deep enough that the dirt at the bottom is cold. Then they lay in it until I catch them and order them into the house (air conditioning) and fill in the hole.
Mine love the heat. My molly will just lay out in the sun and bake for hours, she loves it. There's always water outside and she'll occasionally get a drink which I think is her way of cooling off. We also have a doggie door so they can come out whenever they please, or the sliding screen to the deck will be open. Also Champ loves to be hosed down with water, we'll put the sprinkler out and he'll run through it, or lay down beside it and get soaked. I love the summer weather, especially at night when it's cool and we'll all hang out on the deck with the dogs.
My dogs don't like to come in the house. I have two kiddie pools in the "play yard" in the shade. They will romp in that all day. Lay in the shade. Dig holes to lay in cool dirt (ha my yard looks like tiny meteorites have hit it a gazillion times). And when it is real hot like yesterday and today, I go out about every half hour to hour and hose down their bellies with cold water. They love it and will just stand there. I refill their pools and they have them just about empty from all the splashing when I come out to them again. If I am gone during the day I run the sprinkler and they will play in that. (good thing I don't live in the city, or my water bill would be sky high!!)
I have fans pointed at all Beulah's "spots". She lays right in it. She hates the heat, and it was 103 here today. She has a kiddie pool that I make her get in sometimes, but she doesn't love it. She walks through it and that's all. I feed her ice, and bits of my otter pops when she's lucky!!!
She usually lays on the hardwood floor that stays pretty cool. No AC here, so we just sweat it out!! lol
Cute picture. Mine don't know what it is to be hot. They go out long enough to tee tee and then its back in under the airconditioning. All they do is sleep. I guess this heat just zaps them. They just don't have any energy when its this hot.
kdubbs, it was 103 and you don't have an AC??? Bless your heart! Is the hot weather you're having uncommon, or do you just prefer not to run an AC???
I have mine set at 71 degrees, so the house is staying nice and cool, but we had 106 today AND it was windy *yuck* so it was running pretty hard all day. I made my sprinklers run double time today...between the heat and the wind and all the spots where Zuke pees about a gallon, I don't know if I'm gonna keep it green otherwise.
kdubbs, is it cooling down at night??? It's almost 10 and we still have 91 degrees! l like warm (not hot) weather, but I'm already anticipating the fall :) Stay cool!!!
Valderee... I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. So we go from ice cold and snowy to 103 in the summer. I WISH I had AC, but I just bought this old home last year and it doesn't have it. The home was built in 1891!!! It's a great house, and now that I own it I can't afford to add things like AC! It's like "fix the electrical wiring or get AC? hmmmmmm"
103 is pretty hot for us, we are having a heat wave. Usually it gets into the 90's, but not usually this hot. The good thing is that there is nearly 0% humidity, so that's better than hot and humid!
I do have a window air conditioner in my bedroom, but it can't do the whole house. We usually hide out in the bedroom. If I didn't do that I think Beulah would just leave me and find a richer home to go to!!! ;)
It cools down overnight... usually into the 60's. But I bet it's about 75 right now. Not too bad.
It's been pretty steamy here in Steamburg NY. We also live in an un air conditioned 106 year old farm house. The only access to the celler is outside and it's not a fun place to hang out.
I have 6 hot Dobies, one a momma nursing nine beautiful pups. They usually lay out under the shade trees and get a mist with the hose every hour or so. HOWEVER!! there is a fugitive in our woods and our house is surrounded by armed ( with huge shot guns!) NY State Troopers on foot and on 4 wheelers! So we are all house bound. Thank God all the pooches love scubs! (Ice cubes!). Stay Cool!
I live in north Texas and we are in the throes of a heat wave...I keep my dogs inside but if i have to go somewhere and must leave them out, i make a nice mudhole in the shade for them and hose them off when i get home, or keep the offending dog in a crate inside, yesterday Penny tore up a DVD and box and it was a mess...so Penny is in the doggie dungeon right now witha fan on her as i have to keep my thermastat at 85 or i can't pay my bill, but she is inside. it was 99 degrees at 11:30 this morning, so it's going to be about 105 later...Better a crate inside than outside anywhere...also wet the top of the head, more heat escapes through the head than anywhere else which is why we wear hats.....
