We have a black lab puppy who drinks tons of water. When she does she lifts her head up and walks away from her bowl with water going everywhere. We have a place mat type mat under the food and water bowl but its like she keeps her mouth full of water then just walks away with her mouth full of waterr. I have a huge mess all over my floor and I am constantley wiping the water up. Is this something labs do or will she outgrow this?
Its something labs do and I strongly doubt she ever outgrows it. Mine hasn't. They love water and they are messy drinkers as a result of loving water. My lab used to literally dig in his water dish, he did outgrow that (I think his paws are too big now) but he does still occasionally lay down with his face in the dish.
Labs are not the only ones to have a great time in a water dish. I keep my mop close by as my two new standard poodle puppies think it is a mini pool to play in. All of my7 standards as puppies played in the water dish...it is just one of things water dogs do...they play in water. Wait till your puppy discovers water puddles in the yard...thats a nice first thing in the morning job to clean up after!
my pyr does the same thing...at first, I got a water-hog dog food place mat for him (personalized with his name and everything!) but it didn't work simply because he'd still be dripping when he turned to walk away. I nearly killed myself walking bare-footed on my kitchen floor right into one of the small lakes he left for me after taking a drink.
So....I ended up purchasing a larger water-hog mat (the kind that you might use in an entryway or a mud room) and I feed him on that. It helps SIGNIFICANTLY, but we still get a few drips on the kitchen floor...but nothing that's going to take me down ;)

LOL not a Lab thing...My Dobe pup, Penny, has the most peculiar way of drinking water..She doesn't put her mouth to the water surface and laps, but she immerses her whole snout in the water and even blows bubbles while she drinks!SHe laps it under water, you can't hear the lapping, but the bubbles she blows! This is the wierdest way of drinking that I'ver ever seen a dog do, and let me tell you about the mess!!! Luckily, at the surgery center where I work PT, we have OR towels that normally get thrown away, so I take them home to soak up the mess!!!!

labs have all kinds of water left in their mouths when they drink, and out it comes. and mine still digs in the water bowl, but only outside now. she loves it. i had to get a kennel bucket and tie it to the porch post to stop her.
wolf, i thought my husky was the only one who had that annoying habit!!
shane will submerge his whole head up to his ears in the water dish, stand in it and dig. the water goes everywhere! and best yet, hes taught a couple of the other ones to do it too.
but he sure loves the pool because he can go bonkers in there without trying to squeeze himself in the water dish.
shane also takes a mouthful of water and then comes and rests his head on my lap. knowing that the water is going to go all over me and get me wet. he opens up a little and lets it all out. then will go back to his water and do it again. he also does this to the other dogs when they are sleeping and he wants to play. will get the mouthful of water, stand over them, put his head down as if to sniff them and open up and let it all out on their face! what a silly bugger!
Actually, I thought all dogs did that. I haven't met a dog yet that was a neat drinker. They all want to come over to me and dribble all over me and everything else! I think it's a sign that they love you!
