We are getting a Papillon puppy in about three weeks (depending on how she weans). We met her last week (her four week b-day), and she seemed really timid, shaky. She is an only pup, the breeder said she would start socializing her with other pups this week. One concern I have is will this help her with being so timid? Also, I think I read somewhere that you are supposed to tape Paps' ears to make them stand properly, the breeder said no, but I want to make sure. I have never had a puppy (always rescued), so this is all very new to me! Thanks for any responses/advice!
Hmmm. Because she is timid and shaky, and because she was the only puppy of the litter (which means she will possibly be less friendly with dogs when she is older) maybe you should just buy a different Pap pup from a different breeder? Or you can spend some extra work on her to get her used to other dogs and stop her from being so scared and timid, although this could be hard and take time.
I am quite sure that the ears don't have to be taped. I think they naturally stand up.

Socialization is one of the most important things in raising a puppy. You will have to spend a lot of time socializing any puppy you get. Remember though certain traits can not always be trained out. Dogs (like people)are born with certain character traits. If the puppy starts out timid there is a chance you may not be able to change him that much. Training will help.
Someone once told me not to buy the first puppy you see. I did and she was great but if something is telling you that there is something wrong with the puppy I would listen to that instinct.
I agree most breeds with standing ears do so on their own. Isn't there something called a dropped eared Papillon?
