Hi! I'm new here-- and I could really use some help. I am desperate, and very upset. I have a 4 year old female, white, long haired chihuahua. Macy Jay. She's a very good little dog, a little spoiled. She's my only kid. :o) She has the worst skin problem. We've been dealing with it on and off for two years, but this is the worst it's ever been. It always went away after a week of antibiotics, then she'd be fine for a few months then a week or two of sick...and so on. But now it's been 8 weeks, 4 trips to 2 different vets (3 all together since the begenning). I just dont know what to do. The vets are just guessing. She has these patches of horrible, red, raw (yes the hair has fallen out in these spots) very painful spots on her body. Dry, crusty and raw. It started this time with a little spot on her shoulder, but now her most of her body is covered. She is in so much pain. She's getting quarter doses of temeril-p for the pain/inflamation. She had a penecellin shot, and medrol shot about 7 weeks ago..and has been on lincocin(antibiotic) most of this time. We have tried every cream, spray, shampoo or old wives tale we can think of. A few days ago someone suggested putting vegtable oil in her food to help moisturize her. (she's always had dry skin-- I keep her coat short) She went after that fast- but hasn't help her skin yet. We are trying everything..... I also have started putting lidocaine on her spots...(shes been getting hydrocordisone up until recently) she wont move around with out the lidocaine. Still she's red and in pain... nothing is helping yet. She's so miserable.....and so are we. It's not mange, the vet isn't offering any explanations... only more drugs. (they wanted to put her on cyclosporin- a heavy anti-immune drug for humans. We tried it for a week, her personality started changing dramaticaly. She started viciously biting. We stopped that one. She has had an ashma/ allergy problem her whole life. And in the last few days she's having a lit of trouble breathing. Constantly slurping, hacking and snarfing. We are in a very bad allergy season here-- over 100 degrees with no rain for months. She does get quarters of benadryl a couple times a week to try to help her allergies. Please if anyone has any idea- I would greatly appreciate it. We are exhaused around here. Thank you!! Kris-- South Dakota
Has the Vet not offered the Z/D Ultra Diet? If you go on this diet for 6 weeks to see if there is a difference, you can stop all those drugs that are probly makeing the problem worse. Some Vets are drug happy. The diet is through the vets, comes in wet and dry.
I agree with pwcorgilover that you should see a specialist. When I need a specialist I go the the University Of Pennsylvania's Veterinary hospital, you wouldn't believe all the different types of specialists for all kinds of stuff. Do you have any such places in your area?
I don't know if this is her problem or not but a friend of mine has a dog who is intolerate to gluten. She is a Lab mix and when ever she has gluten it does the same kind of things that are happening to your baby.
