In a small area on the back side of his ear I had noticed this black gunk kept showing up there in his fur, kinda looks like eye boogers. lol Well I looked at it and there is a spot that looks a little irritated with some of the fur gone. Does this sound like mange? Anything else it might be?

could be a few things..fly bites, ringworm, dermititis....Id say clean it off and see what it looks like when its clear of hair..and dry..if its flaky it might be ring worm...i bet there are more things..but i wanted to say hay when i had the chance...good luck with the pooch...take care
How are the inside of the ears? Are they filled with a gunk too?
Often with very irriated or infected ears a dark gunk will be present. It will cause a lot of itching/scratching/head shaking too.
I know this sounds gross but smell the ears. If they have a strong or bad smell along with excess gunk you may need to visit the vet.
If it seems like only a little try wiping out the inside of the ears and (if you know how) properly clean the ears with an ear solution. Be sure to wipe out a second time after putting in the solution since this tends to dislodge a good amount of stuff.
If the problem persists OR if your dog seems uncomfortable take to the vet. If it is an infection they will give antibiotics and sometimes a medicine to put in the ear.
It could also be ear mites though I don't know how common it is in dogs it is very common in kittens. If your dog was exposed to a cat with mites or another dog it could have spread. Again a trip to the vet might be the best course. They can determine if its an infection, mites, or yeast infection.

His previous owner had mention something about his ear and there was some antifungal cream in the stuff she brought me of his. She first said he had a ringworm, then she said no it wasn't that and she couldn't remember the name of it. I think I will put some of the cream on there and give it a few days before I go to the vet. This new one here is so expensive.

yes ringworm can come back...over and over and over.... it is a bear to get rid of. my mom, sister, nephew, and bother in law got it from a kitten. They all had to go to the doctor and get a oral medicine to take for 4 weeks, as well as a topical cream. The kitty had to take something too. Anyway, before all was said and done, I had alitter of yorkie pups with ringworm...YIKES!! Good luck!! Steph
