I had a chihuahua that died in december. It is still a mystery as to what caused his death. He was fine one minute, and ten minutes later he was just laying there dead. There were 4 in his litter and another one did the same thing. It was chasing a bug and just fell over dead. What the heck could've happened to these 8 month old chihuahua's?
did you have a narcropsy performed??? It could have been a genetic problem. If this was done and it proved to be the breeder's faulty they would have had to refund your money on the chi's. I am so sorry this happened to your baby. (((HUGS)))
Other than losing a friend, it wasn't such a big deal (money). The dog was a free gift from my dads neighbor. None of the dogs had papers. Somebody else told me about the low blood sugar problems, but it was after the fact.
Dear jch216, I am very sorry to hear about your loss. You should of had an atopsy done. Sounds like it could have been poison. Could of also been internal parasites that were never treated or detected. Or, it could of been congenitial heart failure. Was most likely a heart problem. Check and see if there is any congenitial heart failure in his lines. It sounds like that to me. Best of Wishes, LindyLou
I think Chilipepper thinks I'm nuts...:) But I would say it was the sugar thing. That can happen very quickly (Not just running and fall over quick) but in under an hour. If not given sugar IMMEDIATLEY they WILL die. I'm sorry for your loss. We had a puppy once that had Congenital Heart/Lung failure but she didn't just fall over. She woke up one morning and had very labored breathing...we went to the vet immediatley and he tried to relieve some of the fluid in her lungs, but it was too late. We lost the little sweetie. But he did perform an autopsy for us and he confirmed it was congenital Heart/Lung failure. It can happen to the best of them. Once again, sorry for your loss. --PuPz
i would venture to say it was heart related. if low blood sugar the pups wouldn't be fine one minute then dead the next. they would appear to be drunk like, disoriented etc. then if not taken care of quickly will pass away. i have seen diabetics come in with very low blood sugar that owners found when they have gotten home from work. so who knows how long they had been like that.
I agree with Scout1, there would have been signs of low blood sugar. I do know that if a puppy does not get what it needs from its mother it can have low blood. That would be why the other pup died also.
I think it was probably low blood sugar in my dogs case. He was lethargic that evening and refused to eat his dinner. I knew he didn't feel well, but I've had dogs get upset stomachs and act like he did and then be fine the next day. I thought that maybe the other pups sudden death may have been related. But if the low blood sugar can take their life in an hour or two, then that's probably what happened.
