I feel like I've been posting a lot here, but things keep popping into my head and it's WAY too hot to go outside today.
I posted a little while ago about possibly getting a pug or a poodle. I'm leaning towards a poodle, but I was wondering about sizing.
I'd like a dog that is about 10" high at the shoulder, and that's the cusp of toy vs. mini. I assume that male toys probably tend towards the 10" mark, and female minis tend towards that same mark.
I've always had female dogs, and would prefer a female again, so should I look at miniature poodles instead? Do different breeders favor different sizes, i.e. some miniature poodle breeders want their dogs to be about 11-13", others 12-14", etc.?
hello...i dont know much about poodles...but i personally like a more substantial dog...it might just depent on where you buy it...many toy breeders have some minis in the litter but never tell you it will be big...since generally the teeny tiny are all the rage...i would look at both...and get the size veriance of parents and are all the pups in the litter uniform size....i love the minis my self...but not as many seem to breed them so you might just do an over all search of poodles in general...then look from there...good luck to you...i hope some of the poodle owners will chime in...take care
Toys are 10 inch and under, but like all animals it is a guideline. At a show a judge will bring a wicket out and measure, any Toy over 10 inches is disqualified. Period.
But not all toys grow to exact size. Breedersd try very hard to make that mark but like all things created some are smaller, some are a little larger.
For a pet stock Toy poodle, you can go to a reputable breeder and they will have as close to the standard as genetically possibly, but as a puppy it is just an educated guess for keeping records and watching their bloodline as close as they physically can as prior puppies that have already been born and have reached full height.
Research is the key here, call around to several breeders and ask many, many questions. Breeders LOVE talking about their breed and can best guide you with what their bloodline produce and past puppies.
Miniture are like the toys, they have a standard, but it really is up to the bloodlines there also when it comes to correct size and how vigilent the breeder is in keeping within the standard of the varity.
