our puppy was rescued from a hoarder and then a stinky shelter 2 weeks ago... she has been sick since we got her... not eating regularly... diarhea...lethargy... they did a blood test and she has no viral infections but she is anemic... then they found out that she has coccidia (she doesn't eat on the medicine so the vet had us stop for a while) and hookworms... we gave her the drontal on friday and she was better on sunday night and monday morning, she was eating and more active... not puppy active but better... now today she is not eating again... how long does it take for the hookworms to be gone and what can you anyone suggest... we have tried every food that the vet recommends and are exhausted we have spent soooo much money on her in two weeks i am just exhausted not knowing how to help her... she is severly underweight ...
ha! dont know that I qualify as a tenured owner, however I am owned by my very expensive, (these days ) dog! Tsion, Miniature Schnauzer had hookworms recently, I'm not going to get into how he contacted them, or I'll be ranting on here all night! but I gave him the med, it took about 2 days for him to feel better then had to be wormed again in 2 weeks, he also had antiobiotics. Hope your dog feels better soon!
since I don't know anything about the other illness, I'll refrain from giving advice. There are some people on here who will be able to help you, they are likely just not on right now. Do be careful tho, sometimes we have people come on here and give some really crazy advice. Always check with your vet, of course. Again, hope your dog is well soon.
"Drontal (known as Drontal Plus in the Unites States) for dogs eradicates all common canine intestinal worms such as hookworms, roundworms, whipworms and tapeworms. This dewormer product can be used safely on puppies from three weeks of age and 2lbs in weight" On the coccidia, did your vet put the dog on Albon? It would be a medicine that the dog would have to take for 7-14 days and it takes awhile for the coccidia to disappear from a stool sample. Even after she is cured, dead coccidia will appear in a sample for several days. I would get back with the vet on your worries about the dog.

Ah ha! Cece is correct! I had to look it up, as the poster didnt mention it was the plus formula...I have only ever used the straight Drontal. We generally use Nemex liquid for pups and mom, then Panacur for a broad spectrum wormer on older dogs.
Thanks for clearing that up, hate to worry someone!
I use Nemex too. The only reason I knew about the Drontal was that I took my boyfriend's dog in to the vet because I saw a tapeworm when she pooped. Him and his dog live up the street, and not with me, thank goodness--but I am the one who takes the dogs to the vet. My vet then told me the Drontal was good at most all worms and safe, but she told me to make sure I didn't overdose and to use on puppies AFTER they were 6 weeks old. Kinda made me nervous to use it, but I really like the Nemex, cause its safe, even if you give a little too much accidentally.
